Any news on whether this light novel will ever be animated?

There's a thread like this located here: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1204859

And the answer to your question is most certainly a no. There's three main reasons as to why Hakomari would never get an adaptation.

1. First and foremost, it just isn't popular in Japan. The release schedule and the long hiatuses might taken a good chunk of its sales, but its content was also a big factor too. Simply put, LNs where the protagonist isn't self-insert type, or is very antagonist in nature, doesn't sell well in Japan. That being said, an anime adaptation would bring attention to the LN series. For example, Re:Zero's LN sales weren't anything too remarkable in Japan until it got an anime adaptation. People originally disliked the way Subaru's character changed in personality in the third arc, but the anime brought in a new fanbase basically. Hakomari can do the same, except the odds of getting an anime adaption isn't in it's favor.

2. The way the series is written makes it hard for it to work in any other medium. The author takes advantage of the LN medium, especially since you don't get to see or hear anything. Especially in the earlier volumes, the culprits will have their own passages where they're talking. But the way it's written doesn't give away who the culprit is. If it were to get an anime adaptation, the visuals and voice acting would give away the culprit's identity. The only way they can get past that is by having the visuals being shown in a first-person perspective (so you don't see the culprit's face) and there's no voice acting and the dialogue appears as words that come up on the screen, in Monogatari style.

3. Lastly, the content is too risqué for a TV adaptation at the very least. Considering the graphic nature of the final volume, there's no way a TV anime would get greenlit, unless it goes through major censorship. OVA's might be too much for a series that is basically 3-cour material. Seven movie adaptations would work, but again, no one would produce it because it's just not big enough in Japan. Hakomari's time is over to receive any popularity in Japan, and the only way it can gain attention now is if the author's other works become popular and readers decide to check out Hakomari.

You have a point. Also, if the text appears on the screen, it would be a dead giveaway that they are trying to hide something from the audience. The only way to get around any issues around an adaptation of HakoMari would basically be to take as many creative measures as possible to ensure the novel's mystery and character development carries the same weight when translated to animation. While Shaft is probably the only studio that could probably ever do this type of anime correctly, like you said, there are too many odds against them- including all of these creative measures that they'd have to take.

We all wish there was an anime adaption. Would probably be an insanely popular film in the Western world if they actually tried releasing it in the Western world. If anybody finds some sort of funding site in the future to get it adapted let me know.

You can never say never. I bet nobody thought Parasyte was getting an anime, and its manga is like 30 years old. Maybe 50 years from now we'll get HakoMari in anime form.
