THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
My favorite episode yet!

Saw the gender thing coming about a minute early, but the reactions and Itsuki's anxiety were great. And zomg, desertrian!Itsuki was awesome. Spazzing over cute things, then turning on the lackey when he made fun of her. She didn't whine and scream as much as the others, either, so it looks like having less of the flower wilted still affects how the victims act.
It even ended on an unusual message for this kind of show-a girl can be girly, but still strong enough to do 'guy' things. Other magical girl shows never seem to have true tomboys who can stick up for themselves without a guy.

Now it's really a mystery who mysterious guy/obvious romantic interest is. My random guess is that he's another troll of a romantic interest and he'll turn out to be Erika's dad(who has the right coloring).

SakuraPetals-kun is so obviously Coupe-sama that I don't get why they're trying to hide it.

djaknepzkdakldjkadfhrgnropbfja <--- replacement of deleted rant about Itsuki being a chick. It would've pretty much been the same thing anyway. It should also be noted that alll previous posts with me saying Class Prez is sexy should be considered invalid from this point on. Androgynous characters. They're out to get me, I swear.

But the token crossdresser of this shoujo anime was bound to make an appearance sooner or later. I'm used to it being the guy who dresses like a girl, so this was quite the twist. I also thought it was interesting that she liked cute things, meaning that she's not dressing up as a guy by choice. (look at me, reading into a kids' anime lol)

.... I honestly hope to Science that this isn't true but I keep thinking about it and now it seems very probable. Thank you for that.

I'm a bandwagon whore

Not a bad episode I suppose. Myoudouin apparently is a tomboy by rules of succession and not by choice. And she's done pretty well up to this point to perfectly fulfill that role, too. I did role my eyes when I saw the sickly older brother who appears to have tuberculosis or something along those lines. There always has to be some sickly character running around. And I know it's practically tradition and all, but could we get more physicall handicapped characters instead of these sickly ones? It sure would look more realistic.

WOWOWOW I never expected that. I like her very much and thought she's the most special of the cast, outside the 2 Precures.

But I know Cure Moonlight has bright golden hair! This is a nice surprise.

This episode was hilarious! I loved the bribery involved in recruiting new members, how ridiculous the student council is, constantly adjusting their glasses, and it was pretty funny when Tsubomi was in her pajamas. And as always, the message was pretty sweet, too.

Of all the ways I've seen a school club get saved, that bribery was the fastest and most efficient way I've seen.

Also, I like that the Precures this time have unique solo and duo transformation scenes.

Lastly, I was thinking in my mind that if Itsuki was actually a girl, I'd begin treating Heartcatch Precure as Revolutionary Girl Utena-lite. As it turns out, I was right, and now I'll really have to start taking the show seriously because I'm seeing too many similar traits in Heartcatch that I've seen in other shows I respect. Heartcatch initially used fashion as a way for Tsubomi to redefine herself as a person, while the language of flowers was used to interpret and define people akin to fortune telling. Here, Itsuki is invited to control and change her own self-image through joining the fashion club.

There's a theory of how commodities can affect the human psyche. While there's an elongated discussion to be had about the impact of consumer goods on the macro scale of cultural development and the micro scale of the individual, this would be far beyond the scope of Precure. Whether or not the presence of a consumer culture is good or bad, in the context of Precure, it exists to sell toys and fashion, and it just so happens that both managed to help Itsuki with her decision to not feel burdened to maintain a masculine front. As a reversal, a cultural artifact is used to counter one's own societal disposition, as opposed to the former enforcing the latter. Regardless, the topic would best be surmised in a better researched paper of some sort, so for the moment, I just find it interesting that Precure made me recall that theory.

I've seen Heartcatch Precure compared to Digimon Tamers in terms of being the serious outlier of an otherwise kid-oriented series. However, as a personal comparison, Digimon Tamers had screenwriter Chiaki Konaka on board, who has also done work for Mononoke, Shadow Star Narutaru, Ghost Hound, Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, and Kino's Journey. Here, Heartcatch Precure had character designer Yoshihiko Umakoshi and director Tatsuya Nagamine, whom have My Hero Academia, Casshern Sins, the Cowboy Bebop movie, and Mushishi as credited works between the two of them. The former provided Digimon Tamers with its themes and tone, while the latter provided Heartcatch Precure with its aesthetics and, by extention, overall atmosphere. I'm just surprised the atmosphere manages to be both uplifting yet slightly dark underneath the cheeriness. I just hope Heartcatch remains a Precure anime and not something more serious, as while I do enjoy more serious shows, Precure should maintain its image as a kid-friendly magical girl show with surprisingly spectacular action. Anymore than that, and it risks alienating its core audience.

That one girl in glasses who actually showed her eyes while making the menacing pose lmao

Is it my eyes or was there a frame with Cobraja having painted nails?

and i already spoiled myself on what will happen to the President because of the MAL character lists

MAL really changed the spoiler era, huh. Same here. Though it's not like it was a hard thing to predict, or that such a show relies too heavily on plot revelations. It might, but I don't expect it to.

In light of these considerations, and picking out of Ikuhara's anime, I'd pick Sarazanmai (yes it's later I know) as a closer show thematically to Heartcatch then Utena. Utilizing hidden desires to create monsters is the most obvious parallel, though it's somewhat true of Utena too (albeit for a limited amount of time and more superficially). Plus Sarazanmai has the whole desire theme expanded to consumerism (a common lens to look at the show).

Though it might be a wider trend in how magical girls shows produce their "villains" of the episode - unfortunately I don't know much about the genre to confirm that.
