Funny, I always thought when watching the anime that Nanachi was a girl, but I just read the french translation and the translator definitely used male pronouns. So I wanted to learn what was the proper uses of pronouns in the japanese version and came across this topic. It's really funny to see all those reactions. Also like mentionned before with the 'oera' pronoun and also the fact that he/she don't have boob line while Mitty has but like it has already been mentionned it don't mean anything since he/she was really young.
+ Author is a perv xD.

I agree that at the end of the day it doesn't matter at all, but I find it interesting that the author wants the reader to have their own opinion about it. It definitely proves that whatever the gender of a character, if its personality and character design and development are great, the gender of the character is a useless information for the reader.

I lost a lot of brain cells reading this thread.

straight from the mangaka himself

This should have ended the thread right here, but judging from the poll results people are too caught up in their own gendered perceptions of reality to see anything differently. If the mangaka declared Nanachi genderless then that's it. No mannerisms that people are nitpicking over in this thread can change that.

It says "unknown", not "genderless". Are you illiterate?

Most likely was previously male.

1.) Bashful and modest personality, yet walks around topless. If he was a girl he would still wear a top even though he’s now an it, since he kept his thoughts, and would still mentally be a girl.
2.) Did not have boob lines in the flashbacks, which even flat chested riko has.
3.) Relationship with mitty, a girl. So either they’re lesbians or he was male.
4.) Thinks rubbing his fur is sexual contact, approves of riko rubbing him, not reg. So, again, either lesbian or male.

1) Topless because they're covered by fur. A change in body will naturally change your thoughts too.
2) Could just be dead flat, more-so than Riko.
3) Strong non-romantic "love" does exist between friends, especially females. You've also got to consider that Nanachi was completely isolated, and Mitty was the only child who approached her/him.
4) Like the other person said, that indicates she/he feels too much embarrassment in being rubbed by a male, but not by a female.
I think it's most likely that Nanachi is a gay male or a straight female. The latter would be my best guess.

A typical straight male reaction is to blush when another male hugs you? Dunno about that.

To be fair, some tomboy type girls in anime use boku specifically to highlight that fact. Probably doesn't apply to marulk but still figured I'd mention that.

Heck, some non tombyoish girls use it too. Nanodesu anyone?

A girl. Riko referred to Nanachi as "she" when asking Reg about the "kiss". She is shown to be flustered many times when Reg rubs her pelt but not when Riko does it. She was also shown to be flattered for snapping Reg out of his "power" mode until he corrected her that it was her fluff, to which she hit him bashfully.

Reg and Riko have both referred to Nanachi as a female in the English version of the anime(not sure what the quoted users version was but my experiences were on the dubbed version)

The quoted user has highlighted the time Riko did it. Reg did it when contemplating what to do about Mitty during the scene when he looks over at Nanachi when shes sleeping (trying my best to be vague here so i can avoid spoiling too much) Below is the quoted text, if you havent watched episode 13 then please dont show the spoiler, that being said its up to you!

Who cares about their gender? How is that relevant to the story? Nanachi is Nanachi.

We're talking about a furry bunny creature in an anime... GENDER IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! especially when the bunny creature looks like she does!

In my opinion ( and with knowledge i shared above from the dubbed version) I will continue to say she, until the gender is confirmed or until the heat death of the universe, which ever comes first.

Probably a guy but I'll go by the doujins for now and say girl.

I can see the mangaka pulling some big "it's a trap" thing later.

I mean i would assume its a female since nanachi has almost the exact same eyelashes as liza does, and eyelashes that are definitely more feminine. also in ep 13 when reg wants to rub nanachi, nanachi reacts fairly repulsive, nanachi says its because reg rubs in e lewd way but i think you're getting the point, its because they are of the opposite sex. but those are my speculations anyway, feel free to fill me in on anything else.

looks like a girl to me but it doesn't really matter as she/he/it is adorable in a totally non-sexy way just like a bunny rabbit or a kitty cat or a puppy dog is cute and adorable regardless of gender

I find this thread pretty interesting. As a bunny, Nanachi must be classified as a female. And ofc, its gender was a girl-like-bunny-from-the-bottom-of-the-great-pit-named-the-Abyss. Holy moly shit you, Bondrewd! I full of raged again rememberring how the 13 episodes happen in front of my eyes. Lol!

I love how everyone think it s a girl while it was clearly stated by a few comments and the author himself that naachi gender is unknow.

It was never specified that nanachi was a girl before turning into a bunny either

Nanachi is a boy - He seems happy to be petted/hugged by Riko, but uncomfortable when Reg does the same. To me that's a typical straight male reaction. Close physical contact with other males is off-putting but the same with females is desired.

Maruruku is a trap (boy) - He is mistaken for a girl because of the cute dress that Ouzen surely forces him to wear because she, with her rotten personality, finds it entertaining/amusing. He shows the typical reaction of a young male, when he blushes upon seeing Riko's naked body.
then look at it from this perspective .. what if she is a girl ? ... then a girl wouldn't be that comfortable to be petted or even touched by a boy she'll feel embarrassed and try to push the guy away , but she'll feel
a bit akward not that incomfortable if instead it was a girl like her touching her . ...

I'm pretty sure "oira" is a male pronoun but well I know that doesn't prove anything because there are also plenty of tomboyish female characters that use the male "boku" for example.

Me personally I'd classify Nanachi as a male character. His relationship with Mitty seemed kind of romantic to me. Also he was super blushy around Mitty when she first approached him.

The other thing some people already mentioned is that Nanashi doesn't wear something to cover his chest. Even if he's technically genderless now it would make sense if he'd still cover it because well he also wears pants even though he wouldn't need to, right?

At the end of the day though I wouldn't argue about this topic too much it's obvious that the author himself has quite a lot of fun to keep it a secret or rather to let everyone have his/her own thoughts about it so there is no right or wrong answer to that question =)
@Meruru-tan Oira is an old word in japanese it's the same as Seshsha wgich used by both genders ...your claim means nothing bruh , there is no definitive evidence about Nanshi's gender no need to dwell on it.
