----------------------------------------
To my surprise, this actually felt like a finale in particular the second half of the episode.

All the warriors gathering together for their final push for victory. Action packed chereography and some stellar music added in. Idk how to feel about the whole show in general but this finale was one of the better episodes imo.

Oh and this is getting a movie.

Loved seeing everyone fight together in the end but it was pretty sad to see our 2 main boys watch their owner die :(

Still, overall this show had a lot of great action sequences and I liked watching them do their job and interact with one another and their owners

7/10

Also, is the movie a sequel or something else?

Good finale to the series. The action was awesome. Glad to see Horikawa coming through and it was quite sad when Kane-san and Horikawa watched their original master die.

Overall, this was the action flick of the season to me. Pretty much watched it for the cool action sequences. Everything else was sorta okay and the show had it's moments so pretty decent overall and I got what I expected from it in the first place.

I gotta admit that the finale episode was slightly better but, too bad! "all well ends well" stuff will not work here at least for me. Almost 80% total time of the show we have been only seeing their personality stuff and forgettable drama(Kunihiro's arc was ok but it was too late). Not to mention, I find most of the dialogue too weak and unrealistic. I mean, I only see their smiling even during serious battles.

Surprise that they even announced the movie so early. Actually I think movie could fit this show better instead of this TV series format. I wonder if that is a recap movie?

5 /10. This show went downhil after decent cliffhanger at episode 4(or5) then I take this show as a 'guilty of pleasure' genre but shame this is coming from a ufotable anime! I really hope they were actually working for upcoming Fate movie and give us some heat!

I thought this was a brilliant final episode from an anime that has had it's moments...but overall was far from a masterpiece

That Mikazuki entrance tho!!! He is my favorite character in the anime and seeing him enter in the finale and kick some serious ass was a must...so I'm glad that's exactly what I got!

TBH the entire battle sequence was lit af! The animation was stunning (which was a given considering how great it had been through out the anime) and the fight choreography was 100% on point too!

But the most underrated part of this episode and the anime as a whole was the deep dive into the emotions of the characters and the connection they created with us as viewers

the conversation between Kane and Hijikata was deeply emotional and the little conversation between Mikazuki and Kane at the end was deep and thought provoking

It all wrapped up into one of the better final episodes I've seen in a while and it took the anime up a level from a 6/10 to a 7/10 overall!

+Movie coming...I will be looking forward to that!

Well done Ufotable you did it again

Looks like the movie will be an adaption of this season...that's why at the end sequence it was called a "movie version" as in movie version of this anime...at least that's what I think is going on

This may or may not be considered a rant, but given how absolutely terrible and anti-climatic this ending was, it's probably going to be long.
Let's start off with the basics; Hori joining Shinsengumi and Kane-san being unaffected, or shocked to the very least, and acts around him the first couple of minutes as if nothing had changed.
There's a lot wrong with this certain sub-plot that could've ultimately been crafted into an amazing ending, but no. Kane-san obviously manages to persuade Hijikata in returning the blade to the boy; ruining Hori's original plan (which I believe from the dialogue, was to die in Hijikata's place). When Hori does return with Kane-san, he simply shakes off the entirety of the sub-plot with a sigh and a, "all my efforts were for nothing'. By far a greater drop from the climax then Kane-san's attempt at breaking Hori. That's a problem I see prominent in this adaptation, unaware of the severity of some situations.
Hori's attempt at changing history could've caused a lot of damage, not only to his comrades, but to the flow of history (obviously). But, shaken off as a simple thing.
The lack of emotions that the protagonists show due to some environmental changes, with their friends, or history is lacking.
Secondly, let's continue with the fight scene at the end.
I actually called this particular part beforehand; when Jiji, and the other swords entered the battlefield at the perfect time to support the rest. Remember, in the previous episode, it was known that there were 1,000 members of the Retrogade army that were to appear. 1,000. And the boys, fought them all off easily without hesitation as if it were another simple fight. And obviously, with the support of the others it was made much less difficult and more cliche, to say the least.
Okayyy, I may be overly salty here, but I am not nit-picking.
In my opinion, if Hori had broke, or if they had serious trouble with the last battle, it could've been made more interesting. The ending was as cliche as ever with the boys taking hardly a hit of damage. Everything's okay, everyone's okay ending.
It didn't look even the slightest of hard.
The only part I give credit to, was when Hori cried. I actually felt for him (probably 'cause I love him, and his character design) and it was one of the few moments I appreciated.
This adaptation had so much potential, and I, gave it the benefit of the doubt. But, Ufotable disappointed me once again.
???/10

TDLR;

  • cliche
  • overpowered characters that took no damage during the last battle.
  • (somehow) managing to fend off an alleged 1,000 enemies.
  • Hori shakes off his decision like nothing.
  • everyone's okay at the end. :)))
  • ???/10

Mikazuki's entrance was absolutely majestic. And that slow motion scene where he slays his enemy and blood flies literally killed me.

I don't know what to feel about this, to be honest. I like this anime in general and the animation was superb, but in regards to the story, I think it lacks a lot. I wouldn't go and say that there wasn't character development whatsoever, but just that it was focused in, mainly, Izuminokami and Mutsonokami's relationship with their former masters (and a little bit with Horikawa too). But it may be that I haven't played the game before, so my experience with this anime is different (I just started to watch it out of curiosity because cute boys, really); and I really, really want to know more about Tsurumaru, Yagen, Tonbokiri, and all the members of the First Unit. Like seriously, I'm thirsty for them, all the boys. Also, plotholes.

Anyways, I think the animation and music was also great, so I'll give it a solid 7/10.

Well... I was already a fan of the franchise so I was hoping this would be amazing but I guess it was... okay? I don't think it was bad and I enjoyed most of it, but at parts it did feel a little boring and cliched. I feel like I can overlook it though because I have an attachment to the characters and have done since way before this anime aired due to being a fan of the game.

I did really enjoy the last episode though, it was a good finale and had good action and animation. I'm a little sad that there was no interaction between Horikawa and Yamanbagiri on the basis of them brothers, and how there was only a single line about Yagen and Honebami being brothers, but I guess we can't have it all.

Overall 7/10, would probably be a bit lower if I didn't already love the characters so much (my biased way of thinking is too strong). Seeing Hizamaru and Higekiri animated is a 10/10 in its own right.
Personally I preferred Hanamaru and I'm really looking forward to when the second season of it airs in January.

The best episode in this series simply because of that fight against the thousand Time Retrograde Army. It was awesome. Seeing everyone working together was great. Mikazuki's entrance was absolutely epic. It was sad when Kane and Horikawa watch their master die. A decent show overall with some cool moments. 5/10

The swords of Hijikata Toushizo did their best, even if they have to watch their master die in the end :(

The entrance of Mikazuki was so cool and the way he fought side by side with Tsurumaru was amazing too, especially in slow-motion *o*

Love the action and the special effects in it, but I was expecting a little more :/ Like a little more episodes? Dunno. I am not feeling completely satisfied...

It's nice they are making a movie :D But the question is: is it a sequel or a different one? >_>

Pretty good finale. Glad to see Kunihiro making a decision in the end. Must've been hard for him to watch his master die, twice actually. Movie version announcement is interesting. I'll probably watch it.

Overall, awesome action scenes, beautiful animation! Love the OST as well. The OP really grew on me throughout the series. Wish the story and characters were more fleshed out, though. The story was interesting for sure, but it definitely could've been explained more. Characters were neat, but again, there wasn't much development on a lot of them (entire first unit...), which kind of sucks since a lot of the characters seemed really cool. Love the character designs though. 6/10 overall for me. I don't regret watching it, but not sure if I'd recommend it.

Everything delivered as expected. More bishie swords please.

Would play the game /10

While hardly ambitious, ufotable holds the line without overstepping into a poorly conceived anime-story for storyline's sake. It's a shame there wasn't a 'hard' narrative, but I've been very satisfied by the balance between fanservice, historical piety, and great looking katana action bishies. Unlike its cousins, Granblue Fantasy and Kancolle, Katsugeki keeps its head above water without dyeing expectations in a part-done and messy gacha-game story adaptation.

Hopefully the franchise has enough success to push on into a more adventurous work down the line, but I'll gladly settle for eye candy and easy thrills.

The action scenes in this series was the only thing it had going for it, when they happened. Overall I found this series quite a chore to watch 'cause I thought it was boring.
Which is a shame, because the animation was good, I just didn't enjoy it when everyone stood around talking so much about stuff I didn't care about.
I'll more than likely skip the movie.

What started out as a great show ended up being not so great...same with Hanamaru, at first I was pretty pumped but as the anime went on I was like...is that it?

Something happened, that made it a little more boring and less interesting. Probably the long dialogues about morals and strength.

Generally I obviously really liked Katsugeki, but I thought it needed some improvements.

Overall: 7/10

That fight scene was so epic. Kalafina singing during their fight scene against the Time Retrogade Army? Ohmygod. Beautiful. Just beautiful.

Glad Kunihiro decided to be a good boy and not change the flow of history, but seeing their previous master dying in front of them two Izuminokami was so sad.

The grand entrance of the First Unit's leader, though. Hahaha. Glad the First Unit were there to fight with the Second Unit. Glorious. Just glorious. Definitely my fave entire scene throughout this show.

8/10. Yep. Props to that animation, the soundtrack, and the pretty boys. Lmfaojk. I enjoyed every episode of it. :)

Ufotable has some spectacular looking series but their in-house writers are not very good (the main plot barely existed and it got extended to a movie I guess), but I liked the show and what it could offer, some of the individual historical drama was really good. I'm a huge fan of TR so I'm glad we got such godly looking prodution in our sides.

Pros:

--Final episode: As expected, it wrapped up things.

--fucking LOVE Izumi's interactions with both Hijikata and Kunihiro.

--Mikazuki stole the show

--I'm a little prejudiced anyway because I'm a huge fan of the franchise, but I really enjoyed the fact that they developed Izumi's and Mutsu's characters a little more from what their game personas are like.

--Animation was fantastic. Also Kalafina always wins.

Cons:

--They could've had a good plot/development with Horikawa. He really was OOC these last few eps. Game Hori wouldn't take a crap w/o Izumi by his side.

--I already loved Mutsu and Izumi anyway but Tsurumaru and Yagen are my favorites too and I would've liked to have seen some development with them. Tonbotiddy too.

--Mikazuki and co made the 2nd Unit look like scrubs lol

Surprised that there's a movie of this, but I will see it at some point like the fangirl I am. I would've personally preferred a second season though.

I came into the show expecting some very gorgeously done animation and fun fight scenes, and if we got some good writing too, that'd be great - and that's pretty much what I got.

If I have a complaint with the series, it's that the characterization suffered because outside of a few characters from Second Unit (Horikawa, Izumonokami, and Mutsunokami), there wasn't much characterization for the cast outside of basic archetypes. Another 12-13 episodes would have given more time to flesh them out.

I found myself really enjoying Izuminokami's discussion with Hijikata, I honestly expected they would do some stupid stuff like in the previous episodes and then just be done with it, I'm glad I was wrong. This was a very emotional and surprisingly good conclusion to the series.

Overall the series I believe didn't take itself seriously enough. I mean, people that weren't supposed to die were dying, and things that weren't supposed to happen, happened. And every time it was brushed off as "mehh the future wasn't affected, it's ok". Hello?? Butterfly effect?? That basically took out all sense of tension from the anime, to the point where I basically thought "mehh, it's not gonna affect the future" every time something went wrong.

I won't say the anime was bad, but to say that you enjoyed it, you either have to be 1.Someone that likes looking at pretty visuals, 2.Be a fan of the original game, or 3.A girl that likes pretty boys. Those 3 kind of people are the ones I can see giving this a 7+ score. No offense really.

In the end I was planning on giving this show a 4/10 due to the things that I mentioned above (among some other small stuff), but the last episode was very satisfying and well done, so I'm jumping it to a 5/10. It was a very average experience for me.

lol Izumi needed so much saving.
The Hijikata parts were fairly good discussion compared to mostly bland dialogue among the units themselves.
Unit 2 leveled up a lot, and while the war is well animated & nice Mikazuki, it made the army too easy compared to their previous difficulties.
Tho dragged pacing like other ufo shows, the history & plot were still more interesting than the idealism of Zestiria.

Not a bad finale though, and I'm glad the action was right up there but the rest for the most bit was just a pure mess for me.

Going to settle with a 4/10 here.
