Gold Episode, Definitely One of My Favourite From the Franchise!

Sweet Payback:

Some More Grinding from Reina:

Reina's Intensive Blushing:

Pardon me, just had to get those screenshots out of the way. Extra dose of Reina is always a pleasure, after all. Looks like she's stumbled upon the truth though, I hope that won't affect her too much now.

But this one totally bamboozled me:

Asuka-senpai really is crafty and swift with the revelations, yikes. Divorced, explains why the mother is so against her with the Euphonium. Anyway, finally we got to see more of the true Asuka-senpai plus a genuine smile too in the end and so I have to that it totally lived up to the buildup! More info as to why she's been so heartless and hard to figure out too. Oumae was definitely the person to consult for such a thing and she nailed it too. Lol @ the buildup though, mad props to Natsuki-senpai on another note, and Kaori-senpai's advice followed by Natsuki-senpai's 'Daijobu' was hilarious! Good thing she saved Oumae the trouble of getting the snacks though. Asuka-senpai's scary blank expressions there during the shoelace tying scene really scared me but good that nothing bad came out of it. Having the ED be the piece was a really great idea too, I've to say for it gives some real depth to this whole Asuka-senpai focused second half. I'm sure the mother will be forced to let it happen ultimately but I'm looking forward to the buildup to that nevertheless, and I want her to send a message to her father on the big stage more so too!

Absolutely stoked to check out the remaining episodes, this Season has been phenomenal thus far after all!

A bit of a slow episode, it feels like nothing really got resolved. Wonder what's in that letter in the end though, a letter from her mother or her father?

Another amazing episode.

A lot of cute moments. Kumiko and Reina after Kumiko spoke with Natsuki. But yeah, Kumiko at first struck me as a kind of regular old person even as the protagonist, like she wasn't that special. But I've realised that although she seems oblivious, she's very perceptive and knows what's happening around her even when she tries to fool herself that she doesn't. She's found her way to the centre of a lot of what's happening, like what happened with Nozomi and Mizore. A lot of people has also opened up to her, and as far as we know, to no one else. Taki-sensei, Reina, Hashimoto-sensei. It's like people feel they can trust her to hear them out.

And Asuka-senpai is no exception. Although I had guessed that the professional euphonium player might be Asuka's father, I initially didn't really think about the ex part even though I knew her mother raised her alone. But what was more surprising was how he's one of the judges at the Nationals.

Asuka's background story is interesting. It seems even though she's not allowed to meet her father, her father still wanted her to play the euphonium. Maybe it was his way of staying connected to his daughter. And also one of the reasons why her mother is so against the euphonium. Maybe it's partly because the euphonium is associated with her husband, and as things stand it seems that she wants nothing to do with him, for Asuka too.

Initially she just enjoyed playing and didn't care about anything as long as she could play, though that all changed when she realised that her father could listen to her play if she reached Nationals, changing her perspective. I guess that's why in this season she cares so much more about the club and is more serious, instead of aloof and disinterested (in its affairs, not the music or activities) like last season.

Although I don't fully understand what Asuka meant when she said that Kumiko is like a euphonium, somehow it just feels right.

When Asuka smiled at Kumiko at the riverbank, that was probably the first genuine, heartfelt smile Asuka has made in this entire series thus far. Kumiko is really something, someone that people really can expose themselves to. I love the bond between Kumiko and Asuka, it seems that only Kumiko has that bond with Asuka, a bond that even Asuka's friends don't have.

The ending song with Asuka playing was exactly what Kumiko said: sad, gentle, and heartwarming.

Asuka's problems were not solved here, but we did know more and from that we can understand her. I guess solving comes next episode.

Also, points to Natsuki! Even though she wants to perform, she's willingly participating in Kaori's plan to bring back Asuka, which in turn would mean that she's not playing. Natsuki is so mature and I love her, especially how she went from not caring to being this dedicated to the wind ensemble. Natsuki is such an angel!

Onto the next piece!

Good to see the real Asuka this episode, well glad that she admitted to what she did Nozomi and Mizore (separating them before something dramatic could happen which it didn't luckily) was wrong in order to meet her dad at the nationals.

"You're so much like an euphonium, Kumiko."

Seriously, what the hell does this pretentious nonsense even mean? What does it mean to be "like an euphonium"?

Also, I don't get Asuka's logic that she can't hate her mum because she gave birth to Asuka: how would saying that she hates her abusive psycho of a mother serve as a denial of that objective reality? Someone can hate their parents/family while understanding and accepting that blood ties them together, but nope we've gotta have that usual anime thing of abusive, controlling parents having their abusive, controlling behaviour justified and endorsed by the narrative.

Great Kumiko and Asuka moment, so she has her father in the professional Euphonium field and that's why she was so interested in making the fanfare attempt as high as possible in the contests... I hope she'll be able to play again

Truly a beautiful episode, you can feel the connection growing between kumiko and asuka the entire time. Seeing that shine at the end with the piece to close the episode is a very inspiring moment.

Asuka's background finally uncovered... I was speechless about her dad's true identity, now we know the origin of her love towards the euphonium. I hope Asuka's family drama gets solved 'til the nationals.

Seems to be the common trope that the open, fun, and dependable classmates have the greatest burdens at home. Really hope that Kumiko is able to help Asuka push through this.
Knew that the Shindo name was going to be important later since it was focused on in some scenes of the last episode. Never expected it to relate so close to home though - thought it was going to be some distant relative putting expectations on someone, didn't think it would end up being a direct relation.
Glad to see that the entire and is working to try and help Asuka get back, although also now curious as to what Reina thought of Taki's expression in that photo. It's fine to admire him, but someone needs to help her realise that her feelings cannot be reciprocated before she gets seriously hurt :(

aw man now i feel even more bad about asuka. she worked so hard, managing great euph playing and good grades and then she finds out she will be able to play in front of her father only for her mum to do her like that :/

if asuka isn't able to play at the nationals then her mum will easily be the worst anime mum of all time.

asuka is pretty amazing though, no one could have guessed what she was going through by the way she usually acts. i sincerely hope that asuka's mum changes her mind and asuka is able to play in the nationals.

great episode.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

Calm the hell down Reina, it was just his fingertips touching the bare minimum surface of your palm lmaoooo. Though while we're at it, guess now she has an idea about Taki sensei's used-to-be marriage. Must be painful:(

Main thing being Asuka revealing about her past. Though we already had an idea about what she must have been going through, knowing her parents had a divorce kind of.. just kind of tells what pushed her mother to the limit, and what does push Asuka to continue playing euphonium.

Not sure if it's entirely concluded, but that indeed was one genuine smile from Asuka in the end.

I usually comment about the story, but the directing in this episode was something else! The scenes in Asuka's traditional Japanese home, as well as the euphonium playing by the river were breathtakingly beautiful!

Asuka's story with her dad is touching. Also, I liked that we got an explanation for her somewhat mysterious behavior. I hope she keeps on playing.

Man, that solo at the end was so good. I want Asuka to come back but if for some reason that ends up being her last scene? It would be kind of perfect.
