Damn, the feels of this episode...between Ronja and her mother

Interesting still to see Ronja and Birk connect this episode after that breathtaking crisis. They are just so hopeful for the future and the world!

I wasn't expecting that. Nor was I expecting Lovis to show up. I got lost during some of the conversation so I'll have to go again soon.

The problem with upcoming events is now I expect the adults to ratchet up attempts to get Ronja to come home. She and Birk need to stick it out. They're strong, they can do this.

It's nice to see Lovis and all, but she kinda broke the mood between Birk and Ronja after nearly dying from the falls. Birk said it himself, "You are my sister only when greedy falls is calling, but not when your father calls to you with his messengers."

"Would you come home to a father who has so forsaken you that he wouldn't even mention your name? Even if he didn't come and ask you himself?"
"No I won't. That person will have to come and ask me."
At least that was a clue as to what will happen next, before we see that spoiler of a preview.

This episode is easily one of the heaviest and I couldn't help tearing up by the time Ronja was 'baking up' her summer memories (and that background music...T_T). I think this is the first time I've seen so many heartrending lines dropped at once in this show (a lot of which are oddly missing in the film, or its subtitles at least).

It was a pleasant surprise to find a fairly relevant call back to the unearthly ones this far into the story, with Skalle-Per ending the episode by saying that the appearance of unearthly ones = autumn. Gosh, summer is over.

Are we certain they aren't added for this production? The story presented in this anime resembles a Shinju story in that the current plot has Ronja and Birk on a course that leads to their deaths. Only difference being that usually the outcome of Shinju story is known from the beginning. Perhaps the way Goro is presenting it is to play on the Shinju story aspect and drive that home.

I can't be so sure as I haven't read it, but I've seen comments saying that some scenes were expanded from details only mentioned in passing in the book. So I've always had this impression that the anime's being extra faithful to the story than the movie.

But I do agree that going with a Shinju ending can be justified by what the show's been doing so far, like you said, though I think that's gonna be quite a bold move (and for a children's show no less). Not that Goro hasn't tried doing something similar before; deviating from the source story, I mean.

There's a specific screenplay for this, not written by Goro. I haven't read the book either, but my prediction is that someone dies in their place. If I were writing this, that's what I'd do.

I just checked and it turns out that the screenplay for the Swedish film Ronja Rovardotter was adapted by Lindgren herself. That would mean anything in the film could be considered canon.

Oh you're right. Regarding the ending though,
If they opt for a tragic end, I'm not complaining. The show has earned it.

Now that you mention it, I do recall reading somewhere that the film was very faithful to the book, though apparently not as detailed (there's only so much you can fit in one or two hours after all).

Also, I've been reviewing the previous episodes. I'm amazed at how much reiteration Goro packed into this. Mattis spinning baby Ronja back in episode 2 and Mattis spinning Ronja back in Episode 15 comes to mind now.

Haha, I was thinking specifically of an end that would be tragic for the viewers.

Yes, there's plenty! It seems to be used to highlight and contrast the relationships between the characters (there's also one between Matt and Borka). The most obvious are Ronja speaking and acting exactly like Lovis, and hinting at Ronja and Birk's relationship by superimposing their actions with Lovis and Matt's. But the latter I attribute to the original because that scene was also in the movie.

Once again I am so impressed with the way they let the relationships in this show play out!
The scene with Lovis visiting doesn't feel as forced as in the movie and the entire feel is so much more heartwarming!

I like it that they made the conversation towards the end between Ronja and Birk a lot more sentimental as well. It feels rather stiff in the movie if you ask me.

Urgh! I feel like every week I think less and less of the movie that I grew up with! I feel horrible! But Goro-sensei shows again and again what he can create using so many diferent ways of telling this story that are unique and beautiful!

The ending of this episode was perfect! Skalle-per saying that the unearthly ones are an omen of winter was creepy and very well done! That they throw us back to that very intense scene in the fog is also great! Birk's worried expression as he grabs Ronja's arm is just brilliant!

Can't wait to see how they will present what's left of the story! I actually don't care what direction they take the directive at this point, I'm happy with anything!

I'm pretty sure they'll stick to the book tough, they have done that very well so far.
The 2002 Tokyo Mew Mew adaptation is not as great as you remember it being.

The existence of the Shinju story Genre in Japanese culture makes this kind of story a very interesting choice for Ghibli. Hiroyuki Kawasaki (the screen writer) and Goro must have recognized the parallel and decided to play that up, which is a common thing in Manga and Anime. It lends a gravitas to the stories they (the Japanese) tell because the themes that go with it are so important to them. On the one hand the Japanese tend to be Utilitarian, in that the follow their societal system (We're robbers, we've always been and that's how things are), but there's also a streak of rebelliousness that wants to forgo that system for something better (I Definitely wont be a robber!). The fact that they're telling this story is very interesting to me. For another story along those lines see Yoshifumi Kondō's Ghibli movie "Whisper of the Heart".

Adding Shinju to the story, where Ronja would rather live with Birk in the forest than live like that, and it achieves a poignancy that's quite intense. (or as everyone likes to say, "the feels are strong with this one")

Another really amazing episode! I can't stress enough how wonderful Birk and Ronja's relationship is. Birk and Ronja always being on the lookout for each other, how Birk reacted in the fog was yet another great example.

Lovis's approach towards Ronja was so gentle, kind and above all, being really understanding on how she would feel too in a situation like this.

The music this episode was indeed really great! It felt like it really cultivated the already existing emotions to a further extent :/

All the times that hinted winter is coming, even Per had to say it. I have to say that I've been much more looking forward to the next episode recently, the bonds that are built and the story having to end just makes it that much more delightful.

My heart! Oh the feelings! The waterfall scene was less climatic than I expected. Thankfully they survived pretty much unscathed.

Birk revealing his feelings was really strong. I love the relationship between him and Ronja. And his thoughts on the upcoming winter. He really values her. D;

And the preview, holy crap did Ronja just hit Birk!?

Here I was hoping she would take Birk with her back to Mattis' Fort. They obviously cannot survive winter alone. >__<

Four more episodes!!

You have to think about this. Why would Birk want to go back with Mattis? After all, he pretty much beat the kid up. And what's more, Mattis has some serious grovelling to do anyway because he didn't just off the deep end, he beat a kid up and disowned his own daughter. He has to make up for that somehow.

Lovis came to visit Ronja and wants her to return back to the fort.
Winter is coming soon, both Ronja and Birk know that. I really hope that Birk can come along with Ronja or he returns to Borka's keep. It's really sad that Birk's mother/father hasn't visited him before...
And that preview! The scene where Birk shocked me! But thank god he's still alive. And why does Ronja hit Birk? I can't wait for the next episode, apparently, Mattis comes to get Ronja.

There's only one way this has a happy ending, and that's if the adults get their act together. That includes Borka. Otherwise Ronja and Birk freeze to death.

Aww... Ronja x Birk ship is so cute!

That part when Lovis come to visit her,
is was like when mother in law comes for a visit
and husband is not thrilled xD

I wonder what Brik will say to Ronja that she slapped him...

I want Ronja to take Brik with her to Mattis castle...
This castle is big, they can find place for just two of them,
if he don't want leave with Mattis and rest...

Only few episodes left...
Don't want it, but in other way I want see how this gonna end.

Definitely wondering how this will end. Things seem to be going more less well for Ronja, as people go to visit her, and it looks like Mattis is up next. I hope that he will be able to see his wrong way of dealing with the Borkas by hurting a young child, and not just that he misses his daughter. As for Birk, we already know how he thinks and why he will not go back to Borka's Fort. I don't see how he will be able to survive through the winter at all, unless Borka stops the family feud too. But I assume he doesn't know where Birk is otherwise he probably would've visited to bring him back. Ultimately, family members (usually) unconditionally love each other.

I really like how Ronja's clan are gently appealing to her to come home rather than forcing her. What happened to Birk was traumatizing to her and I'm glad they aren't doing anything that would further damage her trust in them.

I feel so bad for poor Birk. I wanted him to at least greet Lovis and let her apologize to him for not being able to help him but after what the men did to him I understand why he's not getting anywhere near them. Nobody seems to grasp how traumatic it would be for a young boy (who stands around and laughs while another adult beats up a child?) and he probably relives the incident in his head when he sees one of them. In addition, he's dealing with the crippling fear that Ronja's going to go back home with them. He knows they can't remain living in a cave forever but he's not ready to lose the happy life they've forged together.

Going to be sad when this anime ends, because I really love it!

Ronja, don't let all the pity go with Birk, do whatever situation to save Birk by any means thru that upcoming Winter.
Preview...oh no, looks like Mattis will go for the soft father strategy to get her back. I hope nothing bad will happen to Birk this time. Ronja should find any way to fix Birk's situation.

"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."
