Asai definitely has the upper-hand in a fight, but this turnout was unexpected.

Firstly, I'd like to mention how interesting this approach to the story is. Me and a friend both thought the story would go in a more ambiguous direction. That we wouldn't know Ishikura’s true intentions so soon, I even thought we would change to his perspective and see him tossing and turning too. But now we know he intends to kill. There's no longer paranoia for the unknown but rather fear for the potential danger lurking here. Instead of being suspicious of Ishikura telling Asai to sleep we straight up know what his intentions are. I'd say this direction was a key moment for what kind of manga this would be! And it makes me wish I considered more about what Ishikura’s plan would be if he was intending to kill earlier. At the very beginning a part of me thought that he wouldn't be able to exist here without help, and without a working leg I immediately thought that the only way Ishikura would kill Asai would be in his sleep. But with his surprise hiding location it suggests he could more riskily kill with a surprise attack. Perhaps if Asai did get his cell phone that would have been the end of the story.

The relationship between these two is an odd one. I get the vibe that they're more so acquaintances but the warmth that Asai has shown Ishikura is meaningful to him. They were initially described as a mountaineering club that does this every 2 years and these two don’t feel that close to me. It seems they were college friends but I suspect they don’t see each other all that often. There are some counters to this though, the fact that Asai was so quick to accept Ishikura’s confession and state in his head that he would keep the secret until he died, or how Ishikura told Asai after the initial confession “you’re the only one that I could call a friend, the only one nice to me after college”. And as my friend said when I mentioned this to them, they can’t be that close if they were so quick to think about killing each other.

I’m confused on if Asai is getting any sleep at all, as that is the most dangerous position but he did mention he’d concentrate for 2 days to avoid being killed. Plus, killing with a knife is bloody but I suppose if Ishikura says no one else was here and cleans up good, dumps the body in the snow, then no one may investigate. Either way, when Asai woke up and saw darkness I thought Ishikura modified the clock to manipulate Asai but the clock too was seen like that. Something else is going on.
