So it has been five years since the murder.
I wonder what caused Ishikura to strangle Sayuri.

No kidding about only have five metres of visibility in that storm.
They really were quite close to the lodge all along; seemingly only a stone's throw away.

I started to read this as a fan of Fukumoto and there's already a few funny coincidences. The other mangaka that is doing the art for his story is named Kaiji, just like Fukumoto’s hit series. Then, there's the character Asai, a name he also uses in Kurosawa. This is a pretty dramatic scenario for Fukumoto, but immediately with discussion about existence, regrets, living and dying, being a bum and being happy to die with nothing to lose, lines like “living long doesn't always mean happiness”, it feels at home. It is a topic that I could easily see one of his mainline characters discussing.

And I feel that there is some ironic humour in this. Ishikura was ready to die so easily as he has not had a great life, here with his one friend, wanting to cast off the one regret he still has, the secret that has changed his life. All he wanted was to get the murder off of his chest and ask for forgiveness, and Asai gave it to him. With a seemingly and relatively unrelated character who simply referred to Sayuri as “the other mountain climber” giving him forgiveness he goes from crying to looking like a happy baby. I had to question, is that enough to die happy and be freed from regret? Not making amends for your actions, not coming forward and saying what you did to the police or her family, but taking a chance like this to get something off your chest and die with a smile? I thought that was odd, and for the lodge to be so close to them and for him to be smiling and quickly wide-eyed realizing that he opened his mouth too soon was comedic to me. He sat there silent and awkward on Asai’s back thinking about what he just did.

I didn't think I would have to ask the question of “what would Asai do with this knowledge” so soon. It was hardly a scare for Ishikura’s life. Is it time to kill Asai too perhaps? It's a lot harder to let go of your life when you have a chance to live. As for Asai, I found him interesting. Upon hearing the confession he was shocked, and we were not given any of his thoughts at that time. Instead he seemed to reason that he should forgive Ishikura in this moment, to let this off his chest, and as soon as he started to rescue him it seemed to be off of his mind, he had a smile on his face.

As for Ishikura’s murder, at first I thought it may be a mystery but it seems to be a clear case of an unplanned murder that he quickly regretted. I wonder what the circumstances for that were. It was before he graduated and with talk about “not having a woman who cares about him” earlier in the chapter, maybe it was jealousy.

Off to a good start. I wonder why Ishikura killed Sayuri.
