Bringing emotional responses from the readers is the greatest thing in fanfics, especially if the readers are fandom blind. That's why I love review games. :) However, this also depends on the type of reviewers. Some just gush and ramble so easily, while some prefer being serious.

From what I learn, well-written characters are the key to bring emotional responses out of readers. To immerse readers into setting, the author has to be VERY good at writing descriptions. I think I'll be posting a rec for the latter kind of fic.

I use OCs mainly for villains or minor allies. The advantage of creating OCs is that you're free to characterize them, so it's much easier to create three-dimensional OCs than turning CCs into three-dimensional characters.

Copy pasted from FFnet's guidelines:

Entries not allowed:

Non-stories: lists, bloopers, polls, previews, challenges, author notes, and etc.
One or two liners.
MST: comments inserted in between the flow of a copied story.
Stories with non-historical and non-fictional characters: actors, musicians, and etc.
Any form of interactive entry: choose your adventure, second person/you based, Q&As, and etc.
Chat/script format and keyboard dialogue based entries.

FFnet's admins are really lax, which is why rule-breaking fics are still up there. However, if the rule-breakers are active at general forums, the chance of having the their fics deleted is higher. If bad enough, they can either have their accounts suspended or even banned.

Funny, I've read a few readers x Canon Characters fics, but I can't seem to immerse myself into it. Maybe because I'm not a fan of shipping. However, I know that regular fics can do the same job just well if written well enough.

I was actually thinking about changing that so the authors would have more freedom, but I wasn't sure until I read your comment. That rule has been removed, so the authors can feel free to use whatever POV they feel most comfortable with. Also, since when do they not allow it? :o I've read many reader-insert fics posted there, though I admit FF.net is not my main source for fanfiction.

I don't believe it tarnishes the reputation of fanfiction. Original characters and reader-inserts can be used to pair the reader/author with a certain character, but more than anything I strongly believe it's a way to get away and plant yourself into an anime world that you truly love and adore. If the fic is well written, you can immerse yourself in it and feel like you actually have a connection with the characters that make you smile and laugh. I suppose that meaning, for me, is why I chose that rule to begin with, but I should have stopped to think that not everyone shares the same values as I.

Reader insert = you-based fic? If it is, fanfiction.net doesn't allow that, while most people write there.

Also, I think you need a variation in the challenge. Don't make everything "Must have reader-insert or feature an OC." You should know that reader-insert and OC fics (especially in shipping fics) are what that tarnish fanfics' reputation because people in general think that they're all written for wish-fulfillment/authors' intent to pair themselves with canon characters.
