Trigun

Vash the Stampede is the man with a $$60,000,000,000 bounty on his head. The reason: he's a merciless villain who lays waste to all those that oppose him and flattens entire cities for fun, garnering him the title "The Humanoid Typhoon." He leaves a trail of death and destruction wherever he goes, and anyone can count themselves dead if they so much as make eye contact—or so the rumors say. In actuality, Vash is a huge softie who claims to have never taken a life and avoids violence at all costs.

With his crazy doughnut obsession and buffoonish attitude in tow, Vash traverses the wasteland of the planet Gunsmoke, all the while followed by two insurance agents, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, who attempt to minimize his impact on the public. But soon, their misadventures evolve into life-or-death situations as a group of legendary assassins are summoned to bring about suffering to the trio. Vash's agonizing past will be unraveled and his morality and principles pushed to the breaking point.

MUST WATCH: Trigun was one of those series that you fall in love with due to its charm, characters, comedy, and world. Every piece of a good story is presented to you and then proceeds to flip everything upside down to reveal its true identity. An extremely well thought out world and story that has you guessing about it, giving you small tidbits of information about the characters and world. This show takes a lot of time to let characters and the viewer to discover things, which can be some people's cup of tea and not for some others. With the bare basics done, the ... music and setting create a unique identity that bleeds through the characters with their iconic designs and creative touches. The overarching philosophy presented is deeply explored and touched upon very maturely. Pacifism in a wild-west-like setting with gun culture everywhere seems bizarre and I love it. The comedy can be absurd and can always make you smile, the plot while disconnected in one off episodes, can still be entertaining and engaging no matter the material. Trigun had "the vibe" much like Cowboy Bebop where the characters bounce off each other due to their stark differences in philosophy or tolerance of one another. Speaking of Bebop, the reason Trigun equals out to Bebop is due to my personal enjoyment of Trigun being higher, but its ending being not nearly as fulfilling or iconic as the other Western flick. It doesn't stop Trigun from still having a solid ending though, and the series itself takes multiple directions that aren't expected as the plot gets more and more intimate. I highly enjoyed Trigun and would recommend it to anyone, a thrilling ride with iconic characters, story and world.

Mixed Feelings

I feel so sorry for saying this but Trigun is yet another old classic that didn't live up to my expectation...

It isn't bad, objectively, as we have a solid story, with good character development, and good animation as well. But the pacing, oh my, it just felt horrible. I couldn't tell where they went wrong, but I can tell they did for sure!

The real story only starts once you've watched about half of the show, in order for you to know the characters better I suppose, but I hate watching a show without any direction to follow so it felt kinda boring. Then the story ... kicked in and damn I loved it! But then again I just felt bored, and I don't know why.
I mean, the story was pretty interesting and I just wanted to know more, but at the same time, my wanting to continue watching diminished with each episode.

Another reason for that boringness may be that I couldn't relate to Vash, he's cool most of time, but sometimes, when he feels depressed, I just feel like he's overreacting, although he has all the right to be depressed. I really got mixed feelings with this show... Interesting and boring at the same time, MC both relatable and unrelatable at the same time as well...

And another thing that I hated was that I was left with some unanswered questions at the end, and this always get under my skin...
What exactly are plants?
How were they created?
What are those huge fudging bulbs in some cities? (although I may already have an idea)

I'm planning on watching Trigun Stampede after this, maybe I'll get some answers, but I would've like to get them all in the original show.

I'm just writing this review cause I felt like I had to justify giving such a low score to this classic, but I still hope it will help some people decide if they wanna watch it or not

I haven't watched anything as boring, overrated and overall just bad as Trigun in a long time. It was a long, slow and tedious journey that felt like it was longer than 26 episodes. Which was surprising to me, as most of what I've heard about Trigun over the years has been overwhelmingly positive. But the bitter truth had nothing to do with my expectations.

As for the story, Vash the Stampede is a man with a $60,000,000,000 bounty on his head. Vash is constantly in trouble because of the bounty on his head and wherever Vash goes, trouble follows him, hence the nickname Humanoid Typhoon. ... But the weird thing is (!) Vash never wants to hurt anyone, not even actual criminals. Actually, this short summary is enough to understand most things because Trigun is an episodic anime and there isn't much in the name of the story. I don't even feel the need to mention the tsundere and the classic mindless giant duo. Wolfwood is the only character in Trigun worth mentioning, but he is a good character only for the Trigun bar, not in general.

Let's come to the reasons that I mentioned at the beginning of the review, why Trigun is such a hard anime to bear. First, Vash's background and who he really is begins to be told after somewhere around 15th-16th episode. Up to that point, you have to deal with a work that is far from funny, pretty mediocre and often laden with inadequate action sequences. I was already disconnected from the story, characters and the setting itself by that time, I was bored to death and I was just trying to be done with it. That's not all. Vash has no middle ground. He is a complete idiot (sadly, not a funny one either) for the most of it and he sometimes gets "too charismatic" but why? Why was this choice made when it was possible to make the character structure more balanced and make him an average character at worst? Beats me. Not that making him that way would save this anime but at the very least, I could have watched a mediocre MC in a very bad anime.

Visually, I can't say it's bad for its time, but at worst, it can't go beyond average again. I've seen older and better ones. Trigun is also quite inadequate in terms of music, frankly, I would expect them to show the theme and action scenes better than they actually are, at least in this way, but both the opening and ending tracks are as ordinary as the ones played during the episodes.

In summary, Trigun is obsessed with repeating its own boring and unfunny cycle. It's full of badly written characters. The action scenes are below average. Musically inadequate. And on top of all that, its extremely slow and boring pacing makes it unbearable. I don't have a comment about people who were hooked on this anime for some reason at some point in their life or just love it out of nostalgia. But this was one of the most overrated things I've seen lately, one of those works that didn't do justice to its reputation and high ratings.
