Golden Boy (Anime) add
accessible but well written, i think anime in general can take notes from this series. it's important to emphasize that the show's humour does not rely on anime / otaku culture references, but ridiculous situations made possible by ooe's perverseness (which is overcome by his extraordinary learning ability / curiosity and savvy). great art direction and well planned storyboards cement this as an enjoyable watch for everyone.

okay so it isn't all bad. this has pretty good production values to kick things off. unfortunately that does not translate to "faithful to the original", which is both this show's saving grace and primary blight. this series is at least as not egregiously heteronormative as the vn (fortunately nowhere near as bad as fate), and i think that the handling of magic / retarded shonen stuff (how many times did shiki practically lose limbs in the vn only to be fine the next day?) is much better when put next to the game. too bad it picks the route with the least amount of ...

Death Note (Anime) add
had this retained the cat/mouse tension and had more of the intense / brilliant gambits this would be a no brainer 9+, but unfortunately this series dies with the main antagonist. it's unfortunate the illusion of the protagonists and antagonists intelligence / wit falls apart with critical errors in logic (made later on) that are seemingly made for no other reason but to help the series meet its anticlimactic and overdue demise. it's a shame, this was gripping early on. i can't help but feel like this was one of the biggest let downs ever in anime, but at the same time for a few ...

Preliminary (2/13 eps)
pseudo profound with blurry thematic focus, poignant imagery thrown left and right with no purpose other than to put you in an unthinking trance. obtuse "mood pieces" mesh cyberpunk multimedia and pseudo-philosophical questions in a slick manner. essentially the matrix in an anime form, so if that is your cup of tea please watch, otherwise stay away at all costs. great production values though.

Trigun (Anime) add
mildly annoying and cliche philosophical aspects, has a series identity crisis which makes the show bipolar in thematic focus (eg shifts between silliness and seriousness that are arbitrary and seem to be what you would call "filler"). someone making kawaii gestures is not character development, and i think the silliness is probably a good idea but should have been paced differently. this sounds really stupid but i think if the humor would have been paced more like cowboy bebop then this show would've been a more cohesive experience. great art and interesting universe. personally i think the series would've been much better ...

Aoi Hana (Anime) add
lesbian fetishism absent, finally a good yuri flick that doesn't pretend to be profound or have rampant fan service. simplistic with pleasant pacing and great music. characters can be really annoying in a couple of instances, but i guess i can't hold that against them as much as to their inexperience, which is in the end more of an asset to the show than a blight. gets dinged for an unrealistic utopian shoujou ai universe and unrealistic handling of lesbianism in modern japanese society.
