Dr. Stone: Science Future

Having resolved the crisis in the Petrification Kingdom, Senkuu and his companions gear up to deal directly with the mastermind behind the petrification phenomenon—who supposedly resides on the moon. The ambitious spaceship project, however, requires immense manpower and critical resources scattered across the world. Thus, the Kingdom of Science exploration team kick-starts its transcontinental journey on the ship Perseus to gather them all.

Equipped with modern technology and bolstered by the new, capable members in their ranks, the exploration team feels confident about setting sail to their first destination: America. They soon realize that the region now hosts adversaries controlling the resources they need, doing so with scientific technology which rivals and even exceeds their own. In a battle of science versus science, Senkuu and his team must outsmart their rivals if they are to have any chance of ensuring the continued survival and rejuvenation of humanity.

This is all excellent setup to an amazing clash between scientists for control over the future of humanity itself.

The challenge that this season presents to Senku in particular is pretty unprecedented, in that he's fighting not just someone from his own time, but a person who is (potentially) his intellectual superior who has had plenty of time on his hands to prepare for other humans to arrive. He and his allies, particularly Stanley, are ready to go to war and are easily better equipped to win this fight, wielding a broad assortment of firearms, airplanes, submarines, and the manufacturing capacity to meet the moment ... wherever they need to. Senku and crew have equipped themselves decently well, but they're not at the level to be able to challenge these new foes. That makes this a very distinct battle from the rest we've faced so far, whether that was a society of warriors led by an erstwhile classmate or an island run by corrupt natives who have only a limited concept of what technology is and how it works. It helps that this is also an existential fight, and not just one over motivations, but one over access to essential resources and the capabilities to use them to revive all of mankind.

Dr. Xeno really shines this season, as does Stanley. It's incredible that, after so many seasons introducing incredibly imposing characters from a physical standpoint, they feel immediately outclassed and it makes sense that they are. Much like in previous seasons, this becomes a race to outthink the enemy, but it feels more pressing this season. There's less of a sense that any single invention or modification will solve for the challenge they're facing as well, and with the group often split up, there's more of a sense that everyone's contributing to their actions.

Really, the main thing holding this season back is that it really does still feel like a lot of this conflict is in its early stages, which, as a manga reader, I know it is. I fully expect the next part to be my favorite in the whole series, but for now, I'm satisfied with the setup.

This season of Dr. Stone feels different from what we have seen before, but that makes sense since the story keeps progressing in terms of technologies and plot. Senku & friends travel to another continent, America, where they are met with people who have been depetrified. Unfortunately, those people have their own agenda and don't welcome strangers who would only interfere with their objectives. They will launch attacks on our protagonists and a battle between scientists ensues.

The reason Dr. Stone: Science Future feels different is because, to me, it feels like there is less sciences than the previous seasons. At least, not the same sciences ... as we have seen previously. The characters have to survive and defend themselves against technologies they don't yet have. The dynamic of this season is different but it is still as good. A little change is great when it makes sense, which it does here.

That said, this season of Dr. Stone is still as funny as the other ones. I'd even say Senku gets crazier and crazier (in a good Senku way). He always surprises us with his choices and will never give up, no matter what happens to him. That guy loves sciences too much, and he will prove he can and will win.

The plot with Why-man has not been addressed or mentioned in this season but it did not bother me because this is a step they needed to take in order to get closer to that mysterious person. It does not feel like filler as it has a purpose and they need it to be able to make their plan work and to keep progressing and moving forward.

All in all, it was a great season, with lots of funny moments, lots of action, and a few plot twists that were amazing. It gathered everything I loved from the previous seasons, and I had an incredible time. In fact, I had so much fun that it felt like the episodes were shorter. I was not bored once. So, for everything I've just mentioned, it deserves a 10 out of 10.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (9/12 eps)

It's painful to write this as "mixed feelings", but this season of Doctor Stone doesn't live up to the overall quality of the series so far. The main issues here are:

1. Too many filler scenes. For example, the whole first episode of this season is a filler - you wouldn't miss it at all if you were to skip and start from episode 2 onwards. If you pay attention later on, you will notice that a few episodes have only 1 or 2 meaningful events for the plot. Sadly, it feels that they are wasting screentime in order to prolong the story.
2. They are repeating ... the plot from season 1 regarding the villain. I won't say much so I don't spoil it, but the villain this time has the same motivation as Tsukasa Shishio (claiming that his ambitions for the world are different from Senku's, and that's his justification for killing). This is frustrating, as we watch this season expecting something brand new to the story, but we are back to the same type of antagonist.
3. Lack of actual scientific content that is plot-related. We have had too many scenes teaching us how to make cocktails for example, and way less scenes about interesting scientific experiments that are plot-related compared to the previous seasons of Doctor Stone.

I rate it as mixed feeling because of the issues I pointed out, but Doctor Stone is still an amazing anime that is worth to watch. My goal is just to point out that if you are hyped about this season based on the previous Doctor Stone series, then you will probably be disappointed because this one is lacking compared to its antecessors.
