Boukyaku Battery (TV)

Haruka Kiyomine and Kei Kaname were once recognized as the most formidable pitcher-catcher duo in middle school baseball. Known as the "General," Kaname paired his expert strategies with Kiyomine's explosive pitches, crushing the dreams of many starry-eyed players who hoped to one day make it to the big leagues.

High school freshman Tarou Yamada is one such former player. Having given up on competing, he enrolls in Kotesashi High School—a completely average public school with no baseball team to speak of—where he discovers that his new classmates are the legendary pair who once destroyed his dreams. Adding to this shocking revelation, he learns that amnesia has reduced the once level-headed General to a vulgar class clown. Having lost all interest in baseball, Kaname dragged a disappointed Kiyomine to Kotesashi simply because the school was close to where they live.

As Kotesashi forms a fledgling baseball club, Yamada meets other players he once admired who also left baseball behind. While they might be unwilling now, Yamada believes that if he can convince such talented athletes to start playing again, it might be possible to achieve their dreams and win the national championship—as long as they can put up with Kaname's incessant joking.

Oblivion Battery is a hidden gem of the Spring anime season. It gives you everything you want out of a sports anime: the hype and excitement, the friendship and teamwork, the growth and character development, and on top of that it’s genuinely laugh out loud hilarious.

This anime is not Ace of Diamond (which some people seem to be disappointed about for some reason). It doesn’t have a super original or unique plot. But it doesn’t matter because it does the plot very well. The humor is very teenage boy-ish, but it doesn’t cross the line of being TOO over the top and the comedy ... is great.

With Mappa on the animation, Mrs. Green Apple on the opening, and an insanely talented voice acting staff, including Mamoru Miyano who steals the show, Oblivion Battery is a fun, easy, enjoyable watch.

Mixed Feelings

I came into this anime with some expectations. I wasn't expecting something really good like Haikyuu but for it to be good. A feel good watch after a long day. It did the job but the MC is annoyingly unbearable. The other characters that isn't Kei are great. They're all distinct from each other and are likeable. The MC (Kei) got on my nerves every episode with his attempts at humour and aloof-ness.

The story itself is average. It is your typical small team making it big plot-line every sports anime have. The thing with OB is that it took them about 7-8 episodes before ... Kei regain his memories. It would've been different if he never regained his memory and relearns baseball and got back his passion. But him regaining his memory made the first half of the anime useless. Like I watched them go through all the learning for nothing because he regained it all back.

The art is amazing. It's expected of MAPPA at this point. Intense scenes are paced perfectly and draws you in. It doesn't shy away from extreme points of perspective. But with MAPPA's reputation of overworked employees and tight deadlines, there are a few errors here and there.

Actually the most dreadful piece of garbage I've seen this season???

If the overused Amnesia trope wasn't already a big red warning tape to run and never look back, the anime has the ridiculous notion that making one of the main characters proclaim "nipple hair!" every freaking episode is how humour works. It's frankly not funny at all, it's cringe at best and sheer disturbing at worst. The focus on that and literal public 'porno' trading scenarios are just... I came here to watch Baseball, not whatever this is? (Also, the fact these grown-ass teenagers are calling each other 'doo-doo heads' like what?)

Going back to ... said Amnesia trope, it's almost as bad as Re-Main; where surprise surprise, the once serious athlete gets amnesia and turns into a complete goof... This anime does that, but somehow EVEN worse. Episode after episode we have to endure the main character whine and complain how he doesn't want to play baseball and then plays baseball, while STILL whining... Frankly he needs a couple more baseballs to the head and get his memory back before I lose my own braincells.

Moving along, the animation style is frankly so far down the drain from what I'm used to from Mappa that it might as well be underground. Half the scenes look like I drew them (and I can't draw anything but stick figures.) There's one scene where one of the characters runs off into the distance and he's literally not moving, his size isn't changing and the image of him is just being moved further up the page. It's lazy and low effort... Other scenes just frankly disfigure the characters so much in attempts of humour, elongated faces with no mouths and all that jazz that just make me wonder what exactly they're spending their budget on (and why we could have had Ice Adolescence instead of this garbage.)

Honestly, the entire anime is a mess, the characterization is all over, the plot seems barely present at best (shoved aside for immature attempts at humour) and the best thing about it every week is when the credits start rolling.
