Buddy Daddies

On Christmas Eve, four-year-old Miri Unasaka arrives in Tokyo completely alone, in search of her father. The bright lights and merry atmosphere guide Miri to a big hotel and a man with a delicious-looking cake. However, the child has just unknowingly walked into the center of an elaborate, foolproof plan for assassinating a dangerous mafia boss.

Professional assassins Kazuki Kurusu and Rei Suwa live together, fleeing memories of their grim childhoods and avoiding emotional connections. When their mission goes awry and they end up bringing Miri home, there is only one reasonable thing to do: return Miri to her mother. But the girl's innocent laugh and pure worldview quickly enamor her to Kazuki, who secretly enjoys playing a parent, and it is not long before Rei's impenetrable heart makes room for Miri.

Miri's every move is unpredictable, and Kazuki and Rei find raising an energetic child harder than any of their missions. Although it presents a great risk to their careers, Kazuki and Rei—both assuming the affectionate nickname "papa"—decide to provide Miri with a normal childhood despite all the odds stacked against them.

I have no idea why I watched this so late. It’s a family-comedy-drama with action and emotions. At first it feels like a fun action series but by the end it really gets to you. I didn’t expect it and I’m sure many others won’t either.

The story follows two assassins — Kazuki Kurusu and Rei Suwa — who live together and never miss their targets. But everything changes when a little girl named Miri enters their lives. From that point on the story shifts and becomes more about parenting, growth and relationships.

You’ll see gunfights, blood and missions but also heartwarming scenes ... that show how these two cold assassins slowly turn into caring father figures. The animation is clean, music and sound effects are great and Miri’s Hindi voice is so cute and lovable.

Most of the anime is light and fun but the last 2-3 episodes hit hard with emotional depth. I wasn’t ready for that and honestly I was caught off guard.

This feels like a complete story and I don’t think it’ll get a second season. Still it’s worth watching. You won’t regret it.

Even if it may not “deserve” a perfect score technically I’m giving it a 10/10 — because of how it made me feel.

Mixed Feelings

Brief & Spoiler Free.
I watched this anime back in 2023 when it first came out, and Buddy daddies coming out around the high of Spy x Family definitely had me (and I'm sure a lot of other people) skeptical and prepared to see any repetitive plots or character tropes to eye roll at. But surprisingly, the anime was really good and introduces characters with unique personalities, backstories, character dynamics and an overall plot that deals with completely different themes than its popular counterpart.

If anything, this anime really just made me realize how much I actually enjoy the whole "Killer parents and found families" trope, ... with how wholesome the character interactions are between Kazuki, Rei and Miri, and how they gradually begin to care for one another as the show goes on.

My only critique is that I wish the show were a bit longer, as brevity tends to have common issues when covering major themes within a brief amount of time. In terms of enjoyment, the main characters' dynamics just grow on you and make you wanna watch more of it added onto any questions related to our protagonists' backstories such as, "Why did Kazuki join the assassin business in the first place?" But considering how the show was meant to only be 12 episodes it makes sense for there to still be some unanswered questions, ambiguity, and timeskips. For these reasons alone is why I scored it the way I did. It is simply a show you can enjoy, but a show you know can still improve.

Outside the show though, I find it sweet how the illustrator is still pretty active on social media and continues to make official art of the little family, even 2 years later!

All in all, a fun watch.

Nothing more than a shallow, poorly executed trope. It had the potential to explore deeper themes while still maintaining a light-hearted mood like Spy x Family successfully achieved, but the lazy writing opted to resolve conflicts at the snap of a finger and brush the characters' grief under the rug.

Miri is adorable, but that is my biggest gripe with this anime. There is something off-putting about a child character that is written to be always bright and cheerful, even though she had gone through multiple traumatic events in her life. Real children, even those with a normal childhood, show some degree of problematic behaviors, ... and that doesn't make them less worthy of love.

Might as well forget about the whole assassin thing because the actions and missions are entirely unconvincing. You could replace their jobs with anything and it would not make a whole lot of difference to the plot.
