[Oshi no Ko]

In the entertainment world, celebrities often show exaggerated versions of themselves to the public, concealing their true thoughts and struggles beneath elaborate lies. Fans buy into these fabrications, showering their idols with undying love and support, until something breaks the illusion. Sixteen-year-old rising star Ai Hoshino of pop idol group B Komachi has the world captivated; however, when she announces a hiatus due to health concerns, the news causes many to become worried.

As a huge fan of Ai, gynecologist Gorou Amemiya cheers her on from his countryside medical practice, wishing he could meet her in person one day. His wish comes true when Ai shows up at his hospital—not sick, but pregnant with twins! While the doctor promises Ai to safely deliver her children, he wonders if this encounter with the idol will forever change the nature of his relationship with her.

By leaning into heavy themes that come with emotionally sensitive storytelling, Oshi no Ko reveals the monetary, suffocating, and sometimes graphic realities of the entertainment industry. The character writing in particular is executed well and explores the trauma associated with high expectations and failure. Moreover, the insight into the production and financial side of business was more interesting than expected. The movie-length first episode has strong moments, but at times struggles to balance the unconventional premise, humor, and logic with serious topics. However, it swiftly recovers soon after. Stick with it. The writing is much more complex than the lighthearted aspects make it to be.

Mixed Feelings

Episode 1 is pretty good and sets up an interesting mystery that the MC is allegedly going to dedicate his life to solving. Then episode 2 hits and all that goes out the window, never to return. Instead we get generic slice of life crap and some surface level commentary about how showbusiness is bad or whatever. Apparently it's not THAT bad though because MC and his whole harem are doing it anyway and seem to be having a fine time for the most part. Also there's a character named Ruby who is set up in the beginning like she's going to be a secondary ... MC but then she does basically nothing the entire rest of the show. Like you could actually just delete her from the script entirely and nothing would be materially different. I don't get it.

The show has potential to become good show but it's don' have nothing has to discuss expect fighting over ships

Another good show spoiled because of ships amd lack of direction

Kana is very annoying and unlikable. I don't care about the struggles she went through, that's still no excuse to behave like a pretentious asshole and try to have your way all the time.

But you know what's worse than an annoying character? A series where most, if not ALL of the cast are as interesting as watching paint dry. Aqua and Ruby are extremely boring and none of them ... have any interesting thing going on for them.
