Denpa-teki na Kanojo

Delinquent Juu Juuzawa is a lone wolf who does not see much use in befriending people. So when a girl named Ame Ochibana claims they are linked together from their previous lives, he is highly skeptical and doesn't want anything to do with her. Even stranger is that her fondest wish is to be his servant. Thinking that Ame must be delusional, he tries to distance himself from her. But when a classmate is murdered, Juu instead decides to keep her close, believing the strange girl to be the culprit. However, her intelligence and skill begin to prove invaluable as the two begin working together to solve the murder.

Denpa-teki na Kanojo weaves together a story of love, loss, and devotion, showing that allies can be found in the most unlikely of places.

Electromagnetic Girlfriend is an eccentric little gem of an anime, absolutely packed with suspense, mystery, and adventure from start to finish. I went into this with the weirdest expectations because of the title, but not even 10 minutes in those expectations were flipped on their head, and I was hooked. Beginning with the story, it really pulls its weight considering just how short the show is with a scant 2 episode run. Without giving anything away, the setup is very out-there but soon builds itself up into this engaging, even surprising story, backed up by some great writing. The mysteries ... are so unique and detailed and take these turns that are just impossible to see coming. This aspect alone is incredibly impressive, and this anime's strongest point.

The art is very solid overall, with distinct character designs and a level of background detail which really brings the world to life, which in turn makes the mysteries more compelling.

The sound is also well-crafted, with impressive voice talent and accurate sounds of life, like footsteps on wet pavement or the buzzing of flies. This is all not to even mention the music, which adds this ethereal sense of mystery and danger to any given scene.

The characters that find themselves in these mysteries are also compelling, and act in ways that feel both classically styled for a mid-2000s anime and also grounded in pretty believable motivations, especially Juu's reluctance to entertain Ame's seeming delusions, or Hikaru's desire to protect her sister. Overall, Electromagnetic Girlfriend is a solid mystery anime, especially for how short it is, and is definitely worth a watch. Indeed, my biggest count against it is that there's not more of it, as even the manga itself is pretty short. Do not sleep on this, at best you'll love it and at worst there are worse ways to spend 80 minutes.

Mixed Feelings

tl;dr: A couple of decent enough mysteries, but a really underdeveloped cast of characters.

This is a pair of two OVAs based on a three volume novel series of the same name. It only adopts two of it’s volumes however, with the first OVA adapting the first volume and the second OVA mainly adapting the third with some minor stuff taken from the second. As one would expect, since each OVA is only 42 minutes and it straight up skips adapting the second volume, that the adaptation has to diverge considerably from the novels with major cuts to the story and a lot of restructuring of ... events.

Each OVA involves a mystery with a psychological horror vibe being dealt with by the two main characters, Juu and Ame. As the title of the series suggests, there is some degree of denpa to it as well, though unlike the title suggests its rooted in the antagonists rather than the heroine. The heroine leans more towards just being a pretty standard chuuni. Each of the mysteries aren’t amazing, but they’re decent enough and they’re written competently enough that they flow reasonably well and have a good sense of atmosphere. Each explores simple themes, the first around the desire to not be pitiful and the second around the desire to obtain happiness, and though this exploration isn’t all that deep and doesn’t really do anything particularly novel, it feels like it hits some good notes and gets in some good lines on the topics.

Ultimately, the biggest problem is that it doesn’t really feel anywhere near a complete story. Each mystery gets resolved pretty resolutely, but in terms of characters it’s significantly lacking. The background on the main duo is severely lacking and thus they don’t feel properly fleshed out. They’re certainly still cool, but their motivations and thought processes aren’t explained properly and thus it’s hard to fully get invested in them. The dynamic between the main characters is interesting and you can kind of see some relationship development beginning, however only just barely. Very little development actually occurs. The word 彼女 in the title seems to generally be translated as ‘girlfriend’, but as least in terms of how things are portrayed in the OVA, I would translate it as simply ‘girl’ as things don’t get anywhere near that point. It also introduces some side characters that could be interesting if used properly, but it never really gets a chance to do much with them. The cast thus feels pretty hollow and the series as a whole feels kind of incomplete and like it’s missing essential elements.

The art and animation are decent enough. The quality of either isn’t amazing per se, but the story boarding and general framing was pretty good and in general worked really well for the tone it was trying to establish. The soundtrack was decent enough but not particularly memorable. There aren’t OPs, and the EDs also had decent enough songs though the visuals were just text on a single color background.

This is what dumb people think a show with depth is. And this is also what happens when a writer who is only capable of writing surface level shit decides to create something "deeper than life" but what ends up being created is some fuckfest of stupidity and unrealistic levels of edginess combined with a main character who is incapable of original thought, whose only trait is to be the kind "delinquent". And of course that kindness starts and ends at girls because if all these characters were males instead than the story would not be what it is because we, men are incapable of ... writing a story where kindness is extended to another man. So it always needs to be a cute girl at the receiving end of that kindness, even if she is an irredeemable scumbag.

The characters here are flat and basic and nothing new when it comes to anime. The most interesting thing about the main character here is that he holds onto the handles on the train in a very unique way. Other than that he is an idiot who is nice to serial killers and wants to give them a hug as long as it's a female of course.

The so called antagonists in this series are also trash, they're basically the manifestation of what a dumbass thinks a serial killer or psychopath is. If you want to see serial killers and psychopathic people done perfectly then just watch Monster. Cause this over here is just irritating.

Anyways, watch this if you want to waste your time and don't value it. Otherwise find something else.
