The main character was a great prodigy in classical piano as a child, but dropped it due to some traumas with his parents, and the story is about his coming back to the classical music with the help of a heroine who plays the violin.

Both are music themed animes, each having a well rounded cast that have different backstories and individual lore. The vibe is simillar for both as well, as both add comedy to the fray, mixed with music competitions and prodigies in their respective fields.

Both animes are about music and more specifically about high school orchestra clubs, with the main difference that in Hibike! Euphonium the focus is on the brass wind instruments and in Ao no Orchestra - on the string instruments. Both animes are great and portray the characters' individual struggles, the strong bonds between friends and club mates, and ultimately overcoming all difficulties in the name of creating music.

Main character is very talented , you can hear some good damn classical music here. But talent isn't all you need in order to win competitions, especially when opponents practice to be the best.

Standing up for others and dealing with bullies, finding self confidence in midst of it. I believe both series focus on this topic and are rather well written. So if you are looking for series that deals with school bullying, these might be it.

In Nodame Cantabile it is piano at its center while Ao no Orchestra gives us the sound of violin. Ao no Orchestra portrays high school students working together to perform in an orchestra at the same times as being rivals. Nodame Cantabile instead has a slow developing love relationship between the university students at its center. Ah and they both as well as side characters also seem to work towards their personal goals and learn how to  read more
