Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro

An arrogant scientist awakens in the middle of a muddy pigpen, and the last thing he remembers is eating a raw pig liver and collapsing in the subway. He quickly gathers that he has turned into a pig and is now in a strange fantasy land. As he struggles to grasp reality, a young girl named Jess comes to his aid. Jess happens to be a Yesma—a discriminated class of servants distinguished by their telepathic abilities and the silver collars around their necks. Despite his inappropriate thoughts about her, Jess makes sacrifices for his sake, and the pig resolves to repay her the best he can within the limits of his new body.

But Jess' generosity does not absolve her from the prejudice the Yesmas face daily, and the pig begins to suspect that Jess is in greater danger than she thinks. While he wants to visit the royal capital and beg the king to change him back into a human, the pig realizes that he cannot simply turn his back on his kind savior.

Huh... I started this anime thinking it's gonna be some lighthearted ecchi isekai adventure with the reincarnated pig. Well... It got pretty dark pretty fast . The story is this one's biggest forte. It's good. Not some masterpiece but it's real good regardless. The score i give it is greatly influenced by the good story. If the story was mid, i'd give this one a 6 at best, since the animation is some atrocious dollar store stuff. I've unironically seen 18+ anime with more budget . A waste of the good story, and the great art.

Judging by the starting episodes Jess was coming out ... to be a cardboard cutout as well. They also really got that awkward unfiltered inner monologue captured perfectly . It gets way tamer along the line though,since they steer it into a more serious note. I won't spoil the story since it rather relies on some level of mystery, but imma give this much info : Jess has far more agency then you are lead to believe. What that means .... Watch and see.

Also, the VA's really put in the good work, especially Mr Pig and Jess. Even though on a usual basis japanese VA's always sounded real good, they stood out even more in this one. Incredible delivery. Also, that damn giant door opening was wierdly high-quality, sounded like the real thing .

All in all, even though i hate to admit,i weeped. Like a maiden. And that's quite the achievement with story alone, especially since at one of those moments that were supposed to be sad , the terrible animation made me laugh instead. So yeah, watch it for the story, if you're the kind of viewer that puts a big price on good animation, just read the manga i guess? Cuz this one ain't it. I swear they had a 5 dollar budget.

Mixed Feelings

It's one of those "bait and switch" animes.
It starts as your average cutsie isekai but with a perverted (literal) pig. And that's where this anime lost 90% of its audience, because the first 4 episode made people believe that's all there is to it and they quit. But then the story goes dark... real dark... and by episode 8 it's darker than the core of a blackhole.

I only recommend this if you want to know more about the story of a cruel world ruled by magic and its brutal consequences. How humans without moral shackles can turn into the real monsters.

Butareba follows a high school graduate who reincarnates into a Pig after eating raw pig liver and getting sick. Pig meets Jess, a Yethma (referred to as maids) who is in charge of menial household tasks. On Jess' 16th Birthday she decides to undergo a journey to the capital as part of a ceremonial tradition for all Yethma to begin; Her journey is riddle with chaos as she meets Yethma hunters, back alley dealers and other Yethma. As her new travel companion, will Pig be able to change her fate?

Story & Character: 5/10
The story starts very abrupt and opts for a mysterious approach where we ... have to infer to the premise bit by bit as Jess and the surrounding characters explain their situation. It would have been a good approach if the way the mystery alleviates itself wasn't from dialogue; The approach Butareba took felt lackluster due to the fact that the characters are spoon-feeding the information instead of the viewer organically deciphering the mystery through-out Jess and Pig's journey. The way this developed meant the world had no value in terms of the narrative and it became more of a setting that wouldn't be elaborated in beyond landmark names.

Characters felt really weak in terms of depth and progression; There was no emotional connection because they either died too early or didn't have much impact on the story or main characters; only their purpose being fulfilled. Even the two main characters felt awkward at times and in the end; The dynamic between Pig and Jess build up lacked any substance or resolution.

Art & Sound: 5/10
The art was decent but the animation tanked mid-way through the season. It is noticeable to see the art and animation quality change especially during fight scenes with Rossi, Jess, Pig, Naut and the Yethma hunters. However, the art style wasn't that bad in terms of modern day standards.

Sound was decent, nothing extraordinary and no memorable use of theme tracks for emotional connectivity. The voice acting was okay by modern standards.

Overall & Enjoyment: 3/10
The execution could have been taken to a much deeper and meaningful route but it chose to be surface level; The characters although enjoyable didn't have much depth to them and were essentially made to be discarded anyway. The dynamic between Pig and Jess was very hard to enjoy because they lacked any 'real' personalities or convictions that strayed outside of their character persona. Overall, it was below average by a large margin in story, character and art/sound.
