I'd recommend Ponyo more than Deji Meets Girl, but if stories revolving around weird people having water powers are to your interest, I'd give both a go. They have the drama and "magic" necessary and encaptivate an adventure-type story well enough to make it feel as if you too are riding this wave. Or so I'd hope.

Similarities - Both MCs live by the shore/sea - Both MCs are in their teen (in beginning) - Both MCs escape reality (try to at least) - Both MCs experience supernatural visuals of being submerged in water with fish surrounding them Differences - Ride your wave is sad/tragic VS deji is lighthearted and dramatic at times - RYW is about surfing VS deji is about small time family inn and a runaway celebrity

Same art work if you're looking for something colorful and creative.

TV shorts that have the same atmosphere as them. They follow the same formula too and whilst I would recommend Natsunagu more than DMG, they both are able to create characters and dramatic moments in a decent fashion despite short timespans. "Aesthetic" TV shorts too if you wanna go that far.

There's a weird superpower that makes the world look amazing via the power of underwater magic. The ones with this power are partnered with one another to make an unforgettable adventure (more true in Tenki no Ko). Basically a grand time out with some teens messing around with the water. It's good enough, has decent drama and decent supernatural elements to it. Let's not forget aesthetics too. Everyone loves that. And that's the only reason to watch *both* if nothing else.

both shows are slow action supernatural inspired slice of life. They have an artsy feel and are short and sweet.

Aquarium visuals work. Let me first point out how both these works are of different formats and thus use different techniques to be "good". However, they both share a similar theme of the beauty that comes with underwater eye candy. Whether it is a weird guy or taking care of someone, both anime have their duo explore the awesome world of the deep blue. Good drama and SoL. More romance in Josee Tiger Fish. More supernatural in DMG.
