According to the Republic of San Magnolia, their ongoing war against the Giadian Empire has no casualties—however, that is mere propaganda. While the silver-haired Alba of the Republic's eighty-five sectors live safely behind protective walls, those of different appearances are interned in a secret eighty-sixth faction. Known within the military as the Eighty-Six, they are forced to fight against the Empire's autonomous Legion under the command of the Republican "Handlers."

Vladilena Milizé is assigned to the Spearhead squadron to replace their previous Handler. Shunned by her peers for being a fellow Eighty-Six supporter, she continues to fight against their inhumane discrimination. Shinei Nouzen is the captain of the Spearhead squadron. Infamous for being the sole survivor of every squadron he's been in, he insists on shouldering the names and wishes of his fallen comrades. When the fates of these young souls from two different worlds collide, will it ignite the spark that lights their path to salvation, or will they burn themselves in the flames of despair?

11 episodes of perfection.

So very rarely does an anime come out and I binge watch it within one day, especially in this current period. That is what 86 is, a journey that transcends emotions, that transcends actions.

We see a world based on status, plagued by racism and the characters we follow are some of the greatest individuals you would ever get the grace of following.

We get to know them for less than 8 episodes, some we get to know for less than 3. But even with 10 minutes of screen time, they all felt so real.

From the start to the very end, I ... told myself, this would be a mere 8/10 show. It’ll be good, but honestly it was more than that. This was perfect. The way it was shot, the soundtracks Hiroyuki composed. If i was told Hajime Isayama made this, I wouldn’t even think about disagreeing.

The show blew me away, the way it always showed more than one perspective, even going as far as showing a third in episode 10. This was a masterpiece I'd watch a thousand times over, a journey of sadness, grief, anger. A journey to the end.

Mixed Feelings

BURIED POTENTIAL - This show could have been a juggernaut in sci-fi dramas but falls short by opting to pace itself in a way that whips up quick emotional poignance that distracts from the world building and character development it sacrifices. Make no mistake, the people who like this show are attracted to the emotional rollercoaster ride and not any other aspects that make shows like Legend of the Galactic Heroes or Made In Abyss best in class.

This show pulls from great books like All Quiet On the Western Front which is shown in the last episode of season 1. If you haven't read ... this book, you should. If you don't read, there's a movie on Netflix. If you have never experienced war, the story will make you think you have by the time you're done reading it. But 86 doesn't elicit that feeling. It just makes you feel bad for the characters and admire Major Milize for the idealistic stubbornness she has for saving those in the 86th district.

The one thing that the show does have going for it is the same thing that contributes to its flaws: everything happens too fast. It's great this often dizzying pace achieves the same effects of how it feels fighting in war where the days and time blur together and before you know it, you're in a different situation doing a different thing, mourning a loss, or nearly getting killed yourself seconds later.

(INCONSEQUENTIAL SPOILER UPCOMING...)

But the price that's paid is that we don't get to see the full backstory of the scientist who helps out Milize after being suckered into help the Major's unit because her childhood friend (that she ostracized) is still alive. We don't see much of the major's upbringing. We don't see much of anyone else's. Just glimpses. How and Why the war started? Glimpses. Nothing that resonates.

In order to truly connect with and care about characters, we need to see strong bonds develop overtime, much like how One Piece does. I'll never fully watch the show or read the manga but I got up to around chapter 132, far enough to know how character building should be done. When all is said and done, the backbone of these characters' emotions feels hollow.

With a show as short as this, sometimes you just have to pick and choose your battles in order to bring out the greatest in a story. And much like the Alba, this show has no idea how to pick and choose its battles.

Strong 6. Light 7.
I'll write a review for S2 to see if I'm wrong.

This show is really boring

Plot: 86 tries to be deep and profound but is actually as shallow as a puddle. Its not entertaining and captivating at all. Theres also too much talking and exposition which are completely irrelevant to the plot

Characters: Honestly speaking, i do not care for any of the characters in the show except lena and anju. Lena is cute and i like anju because of her va. Shin is too edgy and stoic for my liking. The author tried too hard to make him cool and badass but he is just cringe. The side characters are very generic and forgettable. I didnt ... feel anything at their death and backstory

Animation: The animation of this show is great. The fight scenes are great in terms of animation but lack depth and emotion. Shin fights some robots called legion and its really boring. Theres no strategy involved and we are not shown villian perspectives. It fails to captivate the audience

Music: Great music

Overall: Great show to watch it you want to fall asleep
