Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!

At the start of her freshman year in college, Hana Uzaki reunites with Shinichi Sakurai, an upperclassman who was in the same club as her during her high school days. However, much to her surprise, the once active senior has ended up becoming a "lonesome" student, preferring to spend his free time in quiet peace.

Uzaki does whatever she can to keep Sakurai from being "alone," from convincing him to go to the movies to going to his part-time workplace. While Sakurai finds her irritating and tiresome, he still goes along with Uzaki's hijinks and shenanigans, even if he knows that her perky personality will only lead the two of them into various comical situations.

Even so, as the days pass by, their relationship only gets better, to the point where people around them misinterpret them to be a couple. At any rate, whenever Uzaki wants to hang out with her upperclassman, fun and adorable wackiness is sure to follow!

"Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!" is a really amusing and playful show that is all about the comedic (and sometimes romantic) character dynamic of the dangerously extroverted Hana Uzaki and the highly introverted Shinichi Sakurai. Each episode has Uzaki try to drag Shinichi out of his mentality of wanting to do everything alone by inviting him to do something together. The humor comes from both characters being stubborn in their own wants which creates misunderstandings (phrasing) that lead to wacky hijinks, playful arguing, and teasing. This all leading to the two getting ever so slightly closer to one another as the show ... progresses.

If you are looking for a an entertaining young adult romcom that has an engaging balance of both rom and com, there is a lot of fun to be had with this show.

Mixed Feelings

My first impression of the work was rather negative. Firstly, Sakurai's voice, the main male character, bothered me quite a bit. They chose to go with a voice that matched his "terrifying at first glance" appearance, which is heavily emphasized throughout the episodes. The fact that his gaze is scary and surprising, but in "normal" dialogues, his voice is a bit too deep to fit the situations. His voice doesn't quite match well with the moments when Sakurai will be calmer. However, with Uzaki, although he frequently raises his voice, he is also quite calm and transparent by nature. However, to contrast with what I ... just said, Uzaki's voice is simply perfect for the character. Oozora Naomi, her Seiyū, has beautifully interpreted her character; it's a 10/10!

Another thing that bothered me considerably is obviously the hypersexualization of Uzaki. Like many other works, the humor revolves around the sexualization of its characters, mainly the girls. Yes, you might say that in the case of Uzaki-chan, the story unfolds when they are 19-20 years old, unlike other stories that are often set in the 13-17 age range. But I feel like they gave the characters this age just to justify Uzaki's sexualization, even though she is 19-20 years old, she still has the physique of a teenager.. However, regarding the sexualization, I admit to having laughed a lot during this first season, and that's a HUGE positive point because we don't watch this anime to cry or to delve into a very deep plot, but to follow a slice of life, bringing us smiles, joy, and laughter. I make a lot of comparisons, but I found that although sexualized, the humor in this work was finer, less stupid than many others. For example, I laughed a lot at the moments when the two characters use their words very poorly in public and everyone around misunderstands things. It's something we've seen before, but the way the situations are created is different, although I couldn't explain it.

The animation is nice with some super original shots that resemble 3D at times (it looks a bit like fake 3D, but it's executed quite well). Season 1 was released in 2020, right in the middle of COVID, so I imagine they had complications like everyone else, but the quality was not affected at all! However, I didn't notice any outstanding music, it's quite subjective, but there's nothing particularly original in the OP or the ED, nor in the OST.

I liked the little references to other works, such as Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Uzaki directly references Jotaro and Kakyoin, and there are also references to Conan and many others!

If you're looking for an anime simply to laugh and enjoy the joy and good humor of a character, I recommend Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! If you're looking for something more structured, with a storyline following a plot, or something that can bring you different emotions (because this first season is practically all positive), I wouldn't recommend it.

Where do I even start with this trainwreck? As an introvert myself, I was expecting a relatable and lighthearted anime. But nope, what I got was a cringeworthy show that mocks and belittles introvert personality.

The main character, Shinichi, is basically a caricature of every introvert stereotype. And Uzaki-chan? More like Uzaki-chan Wants to Annoy the Crap Out of Me. Her constant nagging and forcing Shinichi to socialize made me want to scream. Newsflash, creators: being an introvert isn't a problem that needs to be 'fixed'!

I was really looking forward to a cute and funny anime, but what I got was a shallow and insensitive show ... that fails to understand the beauty of introversion. It's like the creators thought, "Hey, let's make fun of those quiet people and force them to be more like us!" Um, no thanks.

Overall, I'd give this anime a solid 1/10. It's a waste of time, and honestly, it made me feel pretty crappy about myself. If you're an introvert like me, trust me and skip this one. Your mental health will thank you.
