Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai? Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen

After a slow but eventful summer vacation, Shuchiin Academy's second term is now starting in full force. As August transitions into September, Miyuki Shirogane's birthday looms ever closer, leaving Kaguya Shinomiya in a serious predicament as to how to celebrate it. Furthermore, the tenure of the school's 67th student council is coming to an end. Due to the council members being in different classes, the only time Kaguya and Miyuki have to be together will soon disappear, putting all of their cunning plans at risk.

A long and difficult election that will decide the fate of the new student council awaits, as multiple challengers fight for the coveted title of president.

Oh man, where do I even start with this anime? This show is a GAME CHANGER.

I mean, who can forget the iconic "Confess your love and lose" scene where Kaguya and Miyuki engage in a hilarious and intense battle of wits? Or the time they tried to outdo each other in a series of ridiculous competitions, from ping-pong to karaoke?

And then there's the emotional depth - like when Kaguya opens up to Miyuki about her vulnerabilities, or when Miyuki's past is revealed, showing a more vulnerable side to his character.

The animation is gorgeous, the soundtrack is catchy, and the voice acting is top-notch. But what ... really sets this show apart is its intelligence. It's like the writers took all the tropes and conventions of the rom-com genre and turned them on their head, creating something fresh and exciting.

I laughed out loud so many times, but also had moments where I felt genuinely emotional. The way the show balances humor and heart is pure magic.

This anime is a masterpiece, and I'm already planning my rewatch.

P.S. I ship Kaguya and Miyuki so hard, it's ridiculous.

Mixed Feelings

I have to say, this season had me holding very mixed feelings about it all the way through UNTIL the latter half. What started off as another generic, repetitive, and annoying back and forth fight grew into something bigger as the season progressed, giving us the backstory and comeback stories that we really needed. Finally, character growth! Just took almost 2 whole seasons. While I am quite a bit upset at how long it took to finally learn about the characters and see them grow, the way that it was done was almost perfect.

Every plotline is still extremely predictable unfortunately... what you think will happen ... does happen 100% of the time. This had to have been the biggest bummer for me as I love to be surprised when watching an anime... not have the equivalent mind of the writing staff.

As I wrote in my review of season 1, Kaguya: Love is War feels like the characters were generated by a machine learning model prompted to create the most generic leads possible: Kaguya and Miyuki are even less compelling than stock tsunderes, Ishigami is your rinsed-and-repeat otaku, and Chika is the embodiment of every single deredere trait possible.

There's no story here: every single episodes starts and ends at the same place. The characters spend most of their time within the confines of the student council room, and little, if any, character development ever happens. The plot, of two characters attempting to convince the other to ... confess their love, is held together by the flimsiest twine possible The story relies on the cast acting like caricatures of real people, and the jokes fall as flat as the story.

But most of us need mindless entertainment, something to turn our brain off and enjoy. It's why sports are such a spectacle, Twilight's explosive and continued popularity. And two of my recent favorites can only be described as dumb: Kamisama Kiss and Promare. Promare is dumb, wholesome testosterone in an explosion of colors. And it is glorious.

But Kaguya: Love is War fails even when watching it with a single brain cell. Even if you ignore the barren wasteland of a plot and how the story falls apart at the slightest look, it still sucks when watching it nearly unconscious after a bender. We are constantly shown something and told another. We are told Kaguya is cold and calculating, only for her to freeze and collapse at the faintest hint of affection from Miyuki.

Chika is Schrodinger's idiot: the plot relies on her chaotic nature and her intelligence being the barren wasteland after nuclear war. And yet, she is likely the most intelligent member of the group, shown to be fluent in French and calculating in cheating at every board game she plays. She reads the emotions of others before they do, and designs scenarios for them to express these feelings.

Even if you fried every single brain worm you have, Kaguya still would be an insult to your intelligence. The only redeemable points, which are woefully average, are the art and the music. You know the intro soundtrack was crafted by a lounge singer with a wardrobe filled with a kaleidoscope of colors and the most ill-advised bowtie just by hearing his voice. And yet this soundtrack is quite possible the most original thought this show has ever contemplated.
