Kidou Senshi Gundam 00 Second Season

In the year 2311 AD, a world that once saw itself full of inter-continental conflict now stands unified, led by the Earth Sphere Federation (ESF). The ESF established a preventative military task force known as the A-Laws, tasking them with shutting down violent terrorist organizations. As they gain more and more legal authority, the A-Laws begin to twist the law to fit their own agenda, ruling the citizens of Earth with a heavy hand.

In response to the fascistic behavior of the A-Laws, the anti-terrorist group Celestial Being reappears. Led by state-of-the-art mobile suits known as Gundam, the pilots of Celestial Being wage a new war with the A-Laws, aiming to stop their tyrannical abuse of power.

Setsuna F. Seiei, pilot of the Gundam Exia, helps to lead the charge along with his fellow Gundam Meisters Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism, and Tieria Erde. But in the process, Setsuna stumbles upon a conspiratorial plot spearheaded by a new faction, the Innovators, and must contend with his own old wounds and ghosts of the past in order to save a world that despises him.

So, let's get started on this anime. This time it's not so much about the intriguing politics that were interesting because they were so different from what we are used to. This differentiation of the first series lies in the fact that the series has something new to give, which allows it to stand out amongst other Gundam shows. Yet, with the occurrences of the latest season, the political aspects, the problems which seem to have been conveniently put aside, have taken the backseat. However, would this trend towards development of characters compensate for a loss of exciting events? It might be true but it ... depends. While I am in favor of the 25-episode format for Gundam series, I have to say that the limited episodes is a major downside for me.

Almost all the primary character are back and the storyline develops fast. Even though the problems from the previous season have been addressed, they are still present. The series does a great job of having a few characters but the 25 episodes limitation doesn't provide the necessary depth to characters such as Mr. Bushido and Ali Al-Saachez which they deserve.

Similar to its precursor, this season is in a rush to finish its plot and leaves the viewers with a sense of more is still needed. With a few extra episodes, I am convinced that the series would have been able to develop fully.

In terms of visuals, there's nothing new from the season one, except for making slight adjustments to the characters' appearance to match to aging. The Gundam designs are kept almost the same, but with some new additions in the later episodes.

HD quality is a great thing indeed, however it gets just a tad too much in the direction of the Dragon Ball Z with the Trans-Am system introduction that adds a specific Shounen touch.

The voice acting in season two is the same, while the soundtrack may have some differences, but still manages to retain the general ambiance. The ending and opening themes carry the same spirit of the first season, but they are different from them in some aspects.

If you were drawn to the first season for its political intrigue, you might be disappointed here. However, the overall atmosphere remains engaging enough to keep viewers hooked. Personally, I consider this series as the quintessential Gundam of the 21st century, in contrast to SEED. I'm eager to see more from this universe and hope for further exploration of its potential. There are still unanswered questions lingering, and the Gundam lore has me intrigued. Here's hoping for more material in the near future.

Mixed Feelings

6.5/10 ~ Probably the only Gundam series to get BETTER in S2

As Gundam fan that has seen most of the Gundam series up until this point im not sure why I left 00 till the end. Probably because the movie was spoiled to me before I even started watching Gundam 2 years ago and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Season 1 was really hard to get through being one of the lowest ranked Gundam shows sitting right next to Wing both at a 5/10. Both shows are plagued with endless problems. Because of this its ... really really hard to recommend 00 to anyone no matter how good season 2 gets if the first 20+ episodes are hard to sit through.

Without having to lay the ground work of the weak characters, there motivations, weak setting, weak plot, and so many other aspects. Season 2 was really able to just narrow alot of focus and expand on existing elements instead of just add add adding to it.

Pros:
- One of the low points for season 1 was the action, season 2 really raised the bar
- Character motivations are really expanded on
- the little bit of romance was just enough for Gundam imo, the intro song makes it seem like its just going to be more seed but Season 2 tackles love more closely to something like 0079 or Zerta.
- just the first episode of Season 2 felt more like Gundam then the first 23 episodes combined, this continues for most of season 2
- I got so many Universal century vibes from season 2, this felt more like them recreating Zeta/ZZ instead of Wing which was a great change in form.
- English dub was = or better to season 1
- the antagonists were just better in season 2 if only by a little
- Thank god that people actually start to die at the end lol, too many people did the miraculous "oops I didnt die" plot thing

Cons:
- dialog was still kinda weak, better then season 1...
- MC still shit
- too much plot armor, most people have aim of a storm trooper
- Season 2 did not have enough child murder, there is a scale for these things
- Romance was over all pretty bad, better then season 1... but yeah not great
- still too many factions
- cast too big, please actually kill them off instead of kill 1 and replace them with 2 people
- dematerialization is kinda bull shit even for Gundam
- Lock-on's brother was kinda a bull shit include
- very unclear what Innovators actually are, how they are made and where they come from
-- everyone mid season just knew what and who they were... no explanation
--very unclear other then their eyes glowing what innovators actually do... how do you fuck up nu-types
--the super soldiers that were just Cyber-nutypes... um... other then being crazy what do they do?
- too many 1 episode/ singe fight upgrades
- its like they forgot to add a "masked" character to season 1... very poorly done

If you skip the last literal 3 seconds of the last episode and disclude the movie that follows this and End 00 right there, the show is much much better in my opinion. Most of the plot is actually wrapped up and there is just a decisive ending that is a bit too happy for me but it works. Yes the show builds up what is beyond earth... but like you can just leave that up to the imagination.

If you made it through Season 1 you will most likely enjoy season 2 or you just love Gundam. I would imagine anyone that disliked season1 more then me must just be a masochist lol

One of the most bewildering shows I have ever watched, packed with concepts that appeal to me then immediately fail in execution. This is best represented by the season's main antagonist, Ribbons Almark, whose combat background and choice of seiyuu convinced me to pay close attention as the season progressed. This was all for naught however, as he spent the majority of the show lounging around without purpose, occasionally warbling passive aggressively to his comrades. That's Gundam 00 Second Season - lounging and squandering.

00 Season 2 abandons the amateurish geopolitical trappings of the first season, widely replacing the conflicts with interpersonal ones that are not ... exactly satisfying, to say the least. Returning characters like Saji Crossroad are granted a good amount of screentime, but their respective arcs can only be described (and I very rarely use this word) as corny. Saji's role as a civilian perspective in the first season was one of the few bright spots in my eyes, but his story is all but squandered here. The dialogue is stilted and feels like it's too self-consciously trying to ape the soap opera antics of Tomino's shows, Zeta Gundam especially. This issue compounds itself when some of the returning characters flat out suck - their drama is a chore to sit through, and is laden with retcons and clichés. I fail to recall all of the names (such is their forgettable nature), but Smirnov's entire family arc in the second half of the show is particularly grievous for this. Weighing a previously subpar character with new baggage does not fix them. As for positives, Lockon is a great character with some actual agency: he acts with intentions to advance his identity beyond his brother, but struggles with morality and his own place within Celestial Being. Also Haro is cool.

The overarching storyline imitates Zeta Gundam as well with mixed results - the tensions surrounding the Orbital Elevator, the orphan-populated faction Katharon... These elements pay off satisfyingly and with great competency, and the conflicts involved in both were quite exciting. What fails here the most is sadly the antagonists themselves, something Zeta Gundam got right the first time. The A-Laws are unmemorable nigh-faceless goons, all of equal combat ability and bland personality. The Innovators are purportedly the true puppetmasters, and are almost worse: their defining characteristic are stupid names. Why would someone be willingly named Revive Revival? Regene Regetta? BRING STABITY? I don't want to think about it anymore. Long story short, the characters and story are a bust.

The art and sound are serviceable, but generic in nature. You won't see any standout designs like the Flag this time around, and the music is nothing to write home about. I have no hesitation in commending the sound design for mobile suit combat however - it more than gets the job done, and the sound effects utilized for beam combat are quite good.

My observations have been halfheartedly scattershot this review because Gundam 00 as a duology musters that sort of response from me: both seasons are seas of lifeless sludge, very rarely showing glimmers of promise or hilariously bad writing. My advice? Save yourself some time and watch Skelter Heaven for your fix of schlocky fun.
