Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon

As Kobayashi sets off for another day at work, she opens her apartment door only to be met by an unusually frightening sight—the head of a dragon, staring at her from across the balcony. The dragon immediately transforms into a cute, busty, and energetic young girl dressed in a maid outfit, introducing herself as Tooru.

It turns out that the stoic programmer had come across the dragon the previous night on a drunken excursion to the mountains, and since the mythical beast had nowhere else to go, she had offered the creature a place to stay in her home. Thus, Tooru had arrived to cash in on the offer, ready to repay her savior's kindness by working as her personal maidservant. Though deeply regretful of her words and hesitant to follow through on her promise, a mix of guilt and Tooru's incredible dragon abilities convinces Kobayashi to take the girl in.

Despite being extremely efficient at her job, the maid's unorthodox methods of housekeeping often end up horrifying Kobayashi and at times bring more trouble than help. Furthermore, the circumstances behind the dragon's arrival on Earth seem to be much more complicated than at first glance, as Tooru bears some heavy emotions and painful memories. To top it all off, Tooru's presence ends up attracting several other mythical beings to her new home, bringing in a host of eccentric personalities. Although Kobayashi makes her best effort to handle the crazy situation that she has found herself in, nothing has prepared her for this new life with a dragon maid.

This is a review of seasons 1 and 2

I feel like the fact that I haven't seen this until now has been a big red flag on my credibility as a Kyoto Animation fan. I think at the time I was just confused at the shift in art style and kinda put it on indefinite hold for that alone. Looking at it now, it's a stunningly animated show in its own right. And I'd much rather have a wide variety of art styles in the animation medium than to have everything assimilate into one singular construct. It's art! Be fun! Be expressive! Be unique! But ... back to Dragon Maid. I think it stands alongside other classic 4-koma series such as Azumanga Daioh and Nichijou with its quick wit and slapstick humor. This show definitely leans more into..... ecchi humor.... than those other shows do, but that's thankfully not the only type of comedy this show has to offer. There are also several sweet and heartwarming moments, especially with the relationship between Tooru and Kobayashi. As well as lots of ultra cute moments with Konna, aka the best girl by a landslide. It even tries to tell a serious story on top of all of that though the origin of the dragon characters, which I wasn't too crazy about. I'm all for trying to pull at our heartstrings when we least expect it, but a lot of the monologues revolving around the "before times" just sorta felt like exposition that I was waiting for them to move on from. It sometimes felt like it was trying to juggle too many genres at once when it really only needed to focus on the comedy and heartwarming slice of life moments. It's a fun watch, for sure. But I definitely much prefer Kyoto Ani's previous comedy phenomenon, Nichijou. But of course, there's no reason why you can't enjoy both of them. And with a new movie coming out this year, it seems like the perfect time to join the fun if you haven't already done so!

Mixed Feelings

The reasons why Dragon Maid is good are that it presents sweet characters with beautiful drawings and animation in the slice of life genre, the characters are sincere, sweet and interesting, and the story is not delved into too deeply in the anime, which gives the viewer the freedom to watch any episode they want. The anime includes comedy, slice of life and battles, neither being too serious nor too sweet, thus maintaining the balance. You already know KyoAni's drawings, they are masters of the epicness of battle scenes and the sweetness of wholesome moments, and Dragon Maid is an anime with better fight scenes ... than some war anime. Moreover, the anime does not focus on a single topic; each episode feels new because the events of other characters take place in each episode. Moreover, the fact that the characters are different from each other and are really interesting makes it interesting to watch. Tohru's obsession with Kobayashi and being the Daughter of the Apocalypse, Kobasyashi being a human among dragons, Kanna's cuteness, Elma's gluttony and her experiences with Tohru, Fafnir being an asocial cursed dragon, Lucao's eyes and ' 'her eyes', Iruru's sweetness is perfect. Of course, the only thing that prevents this anime from being perfect is 'injury'. Lucoa and Shota, Kanna and Saikawa prevent this anime from being perfect. And of course, the fact that the mangaka is a bit 'perverted' supports this. In my opinion, Dragon Maid would have been better without these, but it is still an excellent anime.

This is by far the least comfortable watch in existence. When people say they think "anime is weird", they mean anything from this show. Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid feels like a scroll through R34 with all tags enabled. People keep mentioning the yuri baiting but the real problem is not really the yuri baiting. It's futa baiting. If you don't know what these terms mean, that means you definitely shouldn't watch this. This is deep into porn addict territory.

I think I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to age gap stuff. But this show is definitely a no-no. For example, I usually forgive something like middle-school-child-crush-stuff ... as long as the characters aren't sexualized. However, Riko's crush on Kanna will often tread into sexual territory. That's very uncomfortable.

There's also a dragon woman with massive boobs that regularly flirts with a 9 year old boy. Great stuff. To keep myself sane for a long time, I tried to convince myself that it's just teasing. However, it slowly gets more and more sexual and it becomes apparent that she wants to sleep with a child. Nobody calls her out on this. Apparently they all think it's completely normal.

Fafnir is basically a caricature of whoever enjoys this show. It seems they really know their audience because they made the most relatable character for them. My first instinct whenever he's on screen is to dissociate myself with him (in my head). When the show depicts him sitting in his room with magical girl figurines playing video games all day and not doing anything, I feel greasy.

This show is a pressure test for how much degeneracy you can tolerate and it only gets worse in later seasons. If people manage to link this review to my real self, I am burning all my identity documents and living as a steppe nomad.
