Both anime revolve around a group of boys at a music academy who train to become idols. The main difference is that UtaPri has a female lead while HSSM focuses on the boys. The boys in each have similar character designs and personalities.

I would highly recommend both of these shows to those who love music-based anime with a majority cast of pretty male characters. The music is varied in the genres, and the characters are all charming in interesting ways rather than generic stereotypes, with their own personal stories or struggles.

Idol anime with male idols with interesting personality's. The songs are both also unique and catchy.

Both anime focus on a group of boys and their development together as a team. While Starmyu is about music and Free! is about swimming, both focus on the teamwork and friendship between the main characters. They can both be cheesy and overdramatic at times but if you enjoyed the friendship in one of them, you will probably like the other.

Both anime are about acting and becoming an actor. In both series, each character has their own motivation to become an actor, and they work together to get better for the final performance.

A group of boys on their way to become idols. Starmyu has school setting and Shounen Hollywood story takes place in a theater. In both shows, the boys work hard to reach their goals although Shounen Hollywood has higher grade of realism. Musicals and character songs are important parts of these shows.

-both about male idols -both have no lead female character

Star-Mu is the male version of Aikatsu!, I swear. The five main characters of High School Star Musical are even akin to ones in Aikatsu! Aikatsu! was written for a younger audience, but is still a wonderful show about teamwork and making friends, pursuing a dream, improving oneself, and aiming to be the best! It's very fun and the characters are super lovable, though it may get a bit boring after a while (a long while though X) ), since it is for a younger audience (I would say more elementary or middle school age). Main character from Star-Mu, Hoshiya Yuta, is very alike Aikatsu!'s star,  read more

Like in Love Live, the characters Starmyu/High School Star Musical show their bonds and their friendship through the music they make. It's an emotional journey as the group takle the problems that they face through their journey which are similar to Muse

Both have a very similar vibe, and with Binan Koukou is closer to a parody, both series are collection of moments which are borderlining on shounen ai. Both are light-hearted and feature bright colors in their art styles. The personality types of the main characters are also similar, but a different experience can be gained from watching one over the other.

If you enjoyed Dynamic Chord you'll enjoy Starmyu; both follow emotional groups of male idols trying to overcome their challenges and be their best selves. Although Starmyu is set in high school not the industry itself they're comparable and enjoyable.

The similarities are obvious once you begin watching them; musical, reverse harem, group bonding, and school life are a few similarities that stand out the most. The biggest difference in Starmyu is the absence of a female main character, Starmyu's cast is entirely made up of guys. Other than that their really isn't that big of a difference except the lack of romance replaced in Starmyu by a little bromance but with an all male cast what do you expect.

When I watched the first episode of High School Star Musical, my mind was just screaming PriPara, so I had to make a recommendation. Both shows use a five-person team system, Star Team for High School Star Musical, and Dream Team for PriPara. The main characters are mostly one gender, boys and girls, respectfully. They also both have Junichi Suwabe voicing one of the characters. Really good anime shows so far and if you love High school Star Musical, I can guarantee you are going to love PriPara too!

Shoujo-targeted series with mainly bishounen cast and properties of a musical.

Both have a similar feeling of a group of cheerful guys trying to accomplish things. One is about a musical and another about cheerleading, but they're both very light-hearted with passionate characters.

Natsuki Hanae sings the OP to Makura no Danshi (and also voices one of the characters) and is the main character for Star Myu where he also sings quite a bit. Both have mostly male characters and are directed mainly towards women or girls.
