Both anime are setted in feudal japan and modern era mixed enviroment. Both have kinda useless and careless main character. While in Gintama the main character is samurai and samurais not approved by goverment are banned and swords are being confiscated, in Bakumatsu Rock the main character is musician and musicians not approved by goverment are banned and guitars are being confiscated.

Both are music anime about guys who want to play music they like. While Detroit Metal City is about metal, Bakumatsu Rock is about Rock.

Silly Bishies doing silly things. Enjoy!

While both are slightly different from one another (one is a musical, the other not); it does somewhat focus on the main trio of characters. Primarily Bakumatsu's Takasugi Shinsaku having a similar personality to Bakumatsu Rock's Ryoma Sakamoto.

If you liked Bakumatsu Rock, then you will definitely like Shounen Hollywood. The reason is simple: it has good songs and voice actors and it actually has a plot. Both anime are ilustrating a group of musicians trying to show everyone what they can do. In Shounen Hollywood you will see a group of teenagers in their way of becoming true idols while in Bakumatsu Rock you will see three men trying to show the world ”the true power of rock”. Also, it shares some of the voice actors.

Goofy, colorful, and over-the-top shows centered around people who aspire to be in the music business.
