FLCL

Naota Nandaba is an ordinary sixth grader living in a city where nothing amazing ever seems to happen. After his brother Tasuku leaves town to play baseball in America, Naota takes it upon himself to look after everything Tasuku left behind—from his top bunk bed to his ex-girlfriend Mamimi Samejima, who hasn't stopped clinging to Naota since Tasuku left.

Little does Naota know, however, that his mundane existence is on the verge of being changed forever: enter Haruko Haruhara, a Vespa-riding, bass guitar-wielding, pink-haired psychopath whose first encounter with Naota leaves him with tire tracks on his back and a giant horn on his head. Though all he wants is some peace and quiet, when Haruko takes up residence at his parents' home, Naota finds himself dragged into the heart of the greatest battle for supremacy that Earth—and quite possibly the entire universe—has ever seen.

Naota Nandaba è un comune ragazzo di dodici anni che vive serenamente, quasi noiosamente, in una piccola cittadina giapponese altrettanto monotona; almeno fino a quando la sua esistenza non viene completamente stravolta dall’arrivo esplosivo di Haruko Haruhara, una misteriosa ragazza che fa il suo teatrale ingresso su una vespa gialla, lo investe e poi lo colpisce con una chitarra elettrica. Questo bizzarro incontro scatena una serie di eventi surreali: dal cranio di Naota iniziano a emergere robot, e Haruko si rivela coinvolta in una battaglia cosmica le cui implicazioni vanno ben oltre la comprensione del giovane. Tra animazioni volutamente esagerate, personaggi stravaganti e situazioni assurde, ... FLCL racconta, in chiave comica e caotica, il percorso di crescita personale, fisica e psicologica di un ragazzo che affronta il confuso passaggio dall’infanzia all’età adulta. Con i suoi sei episodi, FLCL è un viaggio breve, ma intenso che vi consiglio caldamente di intraprendere. Sono sicura riuscirà non solo a strapparvi una risata, ma anche a farvi riflettere su molti aspetti della vita.

Mixed Feelings

Writing a review for this anime can be quite challenging, so I will keep it brief. For most of the time, it's a style over substance festival. Very good-looking style, but still the substance feels lacking something.

Beautiful visuals throughout the series, smooth animation with well-executed experimental elements, creative gimmicks, rather likeable characters with various personalities... All is there, accompanied by a good-sounding soundtrack (albeit I can see people who are not into electric guitars simply not enjoying it), even if those guitar riffs might sound tiring to one's ear after a while.

What's the big deal, then? Well, where style shines, it outshines the substance. Likeable ... characters are rather bland and dull. Some of them, like Haruko Haruhara, can totally feel annoying, as if they weren't meant to add anything else to the story but just their own presence and maybe artificially move the whole plot onward in the weirdest way possible. Crazy action sequences might look good, but so what, if they are dominated by wacky sequences, reminding of fever dreams shortly after? Same goes with symbolism. I won't spoil anything, so I will just say that I got what this show wanted to convey. It conveyed it poorly, I need to say. Not because it was unclear, but because it was, just like action sequences I mentioned earlier, dominated by a huge dose of pretentiousness and various other distractors.

It's one of those shows that most will either love or hate. There are also people like me who had fun while watching it, even if they noticed a lot of elements that weren't that good or that felt overwhelming for one reason or another. Hence, "Mixed Feelings" should be one of the best ways of summing up this show. It's certainly worth checking out, even if out of curiosity, but is it essential for every type of anime enthusiast to watch? I don't think so.

To describe this anime to any sane person would make it seem like you’re high on crack, acid, dmt and horse tranquilizers all at once . The plot is either non existent or so dumb it makes slapstick comedy look like Shakespeare. The writing team must have been the people behind the infinite monkey theory trying to write out a masterpiece. It makes no sense, the comedy doesn’t land, the writing is fluctuates between terrible and actively gives you an aneurism. I can’t complain about the art style the visuals are fine and unique. For it being a comedy anime and comedy being subjective I ... understand some may find this funny but I legitimately don’t think anyone with an iq above room temperature could understand this or even enjoy it. This might be the original brain rot content. I watched the entirety of the show in one sitting and with each episode I felt brain cells dying. The description of the show is coherent, the show itself is not. Op and Ed are pretty good songs though. Long story short either I’m missing something or it’s dog shit
