Mekakucity Actors

On the hot summer day of August 14, Shintarou Kisaragi is forced to leave his room for the first time in two years. While arguing with the cyber girl Ene who lives in his computer, Shintarou Kisaragi accidentally spills soda all over his keyboard. Though they try to find a replacement online, most stores are closed due to the Obon festival, leaving them with no other choice but to visit the local department store. Venturing outside makes Shintarou extremely anxious, but the thought of living without his computer is even worse. It's just his luck that on the day he finally goes out, he's caught in a terrifying hostage situation.

Luckily, a group of teenagers with mysterious eye powers, who call themselves the "Mekakushi Dan," assist Shintarou in resolving the situation. As a result, he is forced to join their group, along with Ene. Their abilities seem to be like pieces of a puzzle, connecting one another, and as each member's past is unveiled, the secret that ties them together is slowly brought to light.

Mekakucity actors is an anime that is part of the Kagerou project multimedia franchise, which is a music video series created by vocaloid producer Jin telling the story about a cast of teens with supernatural powers.

The anime is not very accessible as you have to read the light novel and also the manga to really get a better understanding of the series. In addition, the pacing of the show is pretty frenetic as it has a lot of characters in 12 episodes with multiple backstories all interconnected with each other.

It focuses on Shintarou Kisaragi, a teen who has not left his room ... because of his obsession with Ene, a digital girl. He is forced to leave home when he has to replace his keyboard after spilling pop on it. At the store, Shintaro is caught in the middle of a hostage situation when a group of teens with special “eye powers” calling themselves the “Mekaushi Dan” intervenes and saves the day. Shintaro is forced to join the group. Bit by bit the story unfolds focusing on the pasts and a strange conspiracy around the cast and Shintarou having no choice but to go along with them.

The story is told in multiple routes with each form being a different story interpretation like the novels, manga and anime. Each part of the story focuses on one of the characters being caught up in a strange event. The show has a lot of back and forth flashbacks from each of the cast. The atmosphere of the show it’s a mix of supernatural edgy and very trippy especially. The dialogue is somewhat quirky and the characters were pretty interesting and had great chemistry with each other. The voice acting was very good and the The music is really catchy and very upbeat with some really good sound effects.

The animation and artstyle was another huge highlight for me. The character designs were well done. as well too.

Background characters in contrast are grey dull figures in comparison to the colorful cast. The series has a good balance of comedy and serious moments. The comedy especially the fish joke by Marry was really hilarious. The pacing is pretty fast and it takes a lot of effort managing to juggle so much storylines in a 12 episode frame with so many characters. The fast pace meant that character development was put on the back burner. There is also a lot more content that the show could have covered that could benefit from another season but Mekaku Reload is not released as yet. The series is by far one of the most interesting anime out there.

Mixed Feelings

I give it 5/10. It has a good story, but the execution seems to be lacking I guess. Even when I really focus to understand the story I still left with no idea in some part of the story and some just outright happened without any explanation. The inconsistent timing of fast pace and slow pace scene also making it more confusing than it already is.

The story it self is good which is the reason why I watch all 12 episode, but the execution really bring the anime down in my opinion.

The fans of Mekakucity Actors seems to be telling people to read the ... manga and listen to the music to understand the story, which I might do in the future. But personally from the anime perspective they didn't do the story justice with the problem I stated above. Although I have a mix feeling about this show, I do recommend you to watch it just because I find the story to be good, just confusing and bad execution.

Mekakucity Actors made by the Studio shaft, it was an anime that caught my attention for its aesthetic, in which I also expected a decent story, but it was very disappointing. It should be noted that I haven't read the novel so I will not make comparisons with the original material with the series.

The story in Mekakucity Actors has several problems is its poor execution, the pacing in this show is mostly too slow and with many flashbacks shown in a random way, which apart from being heavy to watch is somewhat confusing to understand what is happening. Then in the last episodes everything happened ... too fast and the end is open ending, which leaves us more questions.

The characters are also another problem, most of these are bland and quite boring, although they tell us about their pasts in the flashbacks, this seems to have no weight in the characters, they still don't generate empathy or something, in addition to the little time on screen of these characters, because Mekakucity actors presents many cast of characters, which didn't give its due time.

The only thing that I rescued from this dump is the music (which is quite catchy) and the animation (sometimes it was poor, like the cgi at the beginning of chapter 9, however the animation in general was good)

Could it be done better? Of course, if the pacing wasn't so slow, that it gets boring and the end wasn't so abrupt, that it leaves one confused, the problem here was the execution, there were 12 chapters and none of the characters They weren't given a decent development, maybe if it had more episodes and better pacing, this anime could have been better.

Overall, I give this show a solid 3/10.
