Hadashi no Gen

They both give depictions of what it was like after WWII in Japan. Grave of the Fireflies gives the opinion more after the war was nearing it's end while Barefoot Gen gives perspective of both during and after the war. 

Not only are both films a must watch - they also share a lot in common. Both lead characters are forced to 'be a man' at times of tragedy (despite their age) and both must come to terms with the losses that occur - as such they are both extremely powerful anti-war movies based on real events the authors went through. They are both very upsetting, but don't let that put you off watching these great films! 

It's hard to imagine you'd like one of these titles and not the other --- they are each a unique and interesting story yet both composed of very similar content and themes. Watch both back-to-back for guaranteed sadness.  

It will also make you cry... A lot. The tears will not stop flowing if you watch either of these. They both portray tear jerking tragedies caused during World War 2. 

Both set during war time in Japan. Barefoot Gen is a really heart-wrenching story about one boys struggle after the bombing in Hiroshima. Not for the faint-hearted. 

Both movies make an attempt to depict war through children's eyes in a realistic manner set during World War II. Hadashi no Gen deals with the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Hotaru no Haka with the bombing of Kobe. In both movies the child leads are forced to cope with the catastrophic aftermath of these events. 

Both anime tell about children struggling during war in Japan. Hadashi no Gen and Hotaru no Haka, two animes that portray the cruelty of war where innocent people become victims.

Gorgeous visuals telling the distressing story of the bombings of Japan during the second world war as we follow those who suffer the most, make sense of the world they now live in 

War only brings death. From the perspective of the life of the Japanese before I fell victim to a huge tragedy. They are enough graphics and heartbreaking to have a category for all audiences, they will surely leave you to think about. 

Both tell the story of a young boy struggling during WWII but Hadashi no Gen is more tragic.

Both are touching stories of children suffering from the concequences of war.

Both films show us the hard situation that was experienced in Japan during the Second World War and the struggle of two children to survive the bombing of their cities having to take responsibilities that they should not at their young age. 

Both movies tell the same story of wartime suffering of little children and starvation. Grave of the Fireflies is the more suble one, while Barefoot Gen does not hold back, yet both will make you cry hard over the fate of the protagonist families. 

Both are set in WWII and have young protagonists who care deeply about a younger sibling. Both protagonists are a victim of the war, and they both lose a parent. (One loses both.) 

Both shows realistically portray how cruel war can turn and affect one's life. Set up in World War era, we'll follow the mc journey to survive the aftermath, and how they undergo their 'new' life. 

WWII films set in Japan about the lives of ordinary people, culminating in the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima of summer 1945. Hadashi no Gen has a more in-your-face feel compared to the more subtle In This Corner of the World. 

Both are shows set in WWII detailing the consequences of nuclear weapons and of war in general. Despite the setting, both shows balances melancholic and upbeat moment masterfully and creates a poignant picture of life during war. These shows have the ability to make you feel happy and utterly pained when it wants to. Hadashi no Gen may have dated animation compared to Kono Sekai which was only released recently but it's story is as powerful and timeless. 

Both center around the effects on the general public of Japan in the Hiroshima region losing WWII. While "Kono Sekai" (briefly in the beginning) tells the story of a young girl becoming a woman who then gets married off, "Hadashi no Gen" begins just a few days before the fateful bombing of Hiroshima and heavily shows the aftermath of the atom bomb. (Disclaimer: I mean TRUUULY heavily, do not show this to kids or if you can't handle some pretty gnarly stuff) Both films show some pretty gruesome stuff (especially Hadashi no Gen) but also have some light hearted moments throughout (both films have bittersweet endings) 

Both tell stories of childhood during WW2. Both MCs are ~ 10 y/o chidren, in Ushiro a girl and in Gen a boy, whose families are in the middle of a cataclysmic envent (Tokyo firebombing in Ushiro, nuclear bomb on Hiroshima in Ken). In both, for the first half of the movie regular 1940s family life in Japan is shown. In Ushiro, it reaches pretty much slice of life grade. Both movies end on a high note and a "life must go on" message after the end of the war and horrific consequences for both kids' families. A key difference is that in Gen death and destruction happens on screen, whereas in Ushiro MC at no point is personally in the middle of war atrocities. This narrative stryle makes it more similar to Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni than to Gen, but the depiction of family life and MCs age is more similar with Gen. read more 

the two animes are very similar, gen and koichan's parents are burned to death and the two brothers stay alive, these two animes are like a copy of each other. 

Both are about the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima. 

"Hadashi no Gen" is pretty much "Pika Don" extended into a feature length movie. The similarities go down to re-using full scene ideas and visuals. Pika Don is the dress rehearsal for Gen, no less. 

The story tells about the experience of children who lost almost all of his family due to the war.. If you're looking for similar anime like this, then it would be "Hotaru no Haka" and "Hadashi no Gen".. 

Both shows focus on the aftermath of dangerous events (earthquake and atomic bomb) and focus on the perspective of kids dealing with the aftermath
