Devil May Cry

Patty Lowell—the lost heir of a prestigious family—is found at an orphanage, and J.D. Morrison brings her to his acquaintance Dante, the owner of a business called "Devil May Cry." Dante takes on so-called "odd jobs," and at Morrison's request, he agrees to become a bodyguard for Patty. Begrudgingly, he sets out to deliver Patty to her family, though he is a bit annoyed with a job that essentially amounts to babysitting.

While Dante seems like a lazy good-for-nothing, he is actually a prolific demon hunter, which comes in handy when demons begin pursuing Patty. Soon enough, Dante realizes that there is more to this case than meets the eye, and he makes use of his particular skill set in order to keep Patty safe.

Personal bias aside; it's a show that's not really going anywhere for a few episodes. The show is nowhere close to the games. If you can look past those two things, you'll enjoy this as it's own thing.

The show's themes mostly tackle humanity and what makes someone human. Don't worry there is plenty of actions and fighting. An annoying young girl that sounds like Amy Rose kind of kills it. However the other characters are decent and with how they play off of each other.

It's dark and a bit edgy and the art style fits the tone along with the story. Minor world building elements ... but not much else in that regard.

The drama is okay with how people react to Dante, not much explored with the other characters and doesn't really do much in that regard.

The side characters feel somewhat fleshed out with their own lives going on and don't bog down the story. The goals and motivations of the side characters and or antagonist of the story tie perfectly within the story.

The story is... well it's there; not really focused on nor explored, more effort is put into the side quest if anything than the main overarching plot. The over arching villain is underwhelming to say the very least, the villain does tie into the themes but even then it's, "eh".

It's more recommended for those who don't care for the main story and more focused on the side events of the story and characters.

If you're wanting to watch something with strong writing and a strong focus on the plot then um... stay away from this.

Mixed Feelings

I’ve recently gotten into the Devil May Cry games so I wanted to check out this anime since it adds more to the lore and is canonical. While I think it has some merit, I was left somewhat disappointed.

On paper, I really do love the concept of this series. An episodic series of missions Dante goes on hunting demons and exploring Dante’s story between DMC 1 and DMC 2 as well as adding more lore to the series. I was kinda hoping it’d be like a Clone Wars for DMC. This series generally scratches the surface of it but doesn’t consistently make the most of ... the concept. The series doesn’t really mention the events of the previous games and how they’re weighing on him. As a fan, I can fill in the gaps no problem but I find it hard for a casual fan or a newcomer to understand Dante’s character and mindset at the time. Though, the episodes that do get this right are really really good, most notably episodes 3 and 8.

The artstyle of this show is pretty cool it does capture that gothic horror the series was inspired off of and normally I wouldn’t care for the darker more muted colors in this series but I think it fits for the tone of this series since Dante isn’t really in this best mindset at this point. The voice acting is hit or miss, all I’m really happy about is Reuben Langdon, as usual, gives an amazing performance as Dante to the point where he’s carrying the lackluster writing. Though I feel like the show lacks in the usual Devil May Cry style. The soundtrack is boring and forgettable which is unusual from a series known for its killer soundtracks. Also the action is this show is boring. It suffers from the Samurai Champloo issue where Dante’s TOO good at what he does so every fight is almost over in an instant. Dante never gets the chance to show off his flashy combos and skills which is pretty much the main thing that games are known for. Instead he just uses his guns or uses his sword as a finisher which is disappointing. There are exceptions to this but generally Dante’s fight scenes are boring. Though, in all fairness, I do like how this series did try to play more into Dante’s private investigator angle in some episodes where he beats the demon but outsmarting them. I just wish they could combine the games combat with the detective angle, it would’ve given the show much needed personality.

In general the whole world of this anime doesn’t capture the world of DMC. It all just feels so… boring and mundane. Whether it’s the human aspect, demon aspect, or fight scenes it just lacks the flashiness and bravado that I love about the games. All the characters are nothing burgers whether they’re original or from the game.

Also idk where to throw this but I wanted to mention the audio quality was bad. Maybe it was the site I was using or maybe it’s the show but I had to turn the volume up all the way for every episode and I still couldn’t understand what the demons said or when they’d randomly cut to a far away scene and the audio is far away.

I think this suffers the fate of DMC 2 where, at its worst, it’s not outright bad, it’s just boring. But at its best, this series does shine through but I am ultimately disappointed that we couldn’t have gotten more of those moments. Only worthwhile episodes are 3, 7, 8, 9, and 12 everything else is just kinda forgettable. Alright anime experience kinda weak for fans.

I am a fan of the game series except dmc 2 of course
I can't understand how capcom didn't sue madhouse due to the poor execution
and how could a studio such madhouse play cheap when it gets to something as the great devil may cry series, they should be ashamed
oh my let's start with the opening, if madhouse took divine hate or taste your blood and made amv quality job I would be happy, but no they settled not only on still images but they added the most annoying guitar I heard in my life
Moving on to the battles, how hard is it to animate most ... of the battles, seriously 60% of the time they shoot the sky or other characters and play stabbing noses or don't even bother animating the whole battle
if somehow they do that they keep dragging it with dialogue like in trish vs lady.

Dante is still cynical which is good and I don't bother if he gives cliche lines from time to time but where did his insults to enemies go.
I mean the animation in the beggining of episode 3 is self explanatory of how cheap and low the production was
