Imagine entrar em um colégio só para garotas em que rege o costume de toda aluna mais velha adotar uma “irmãzinha”, petit soeur, uma aluna mais nova sob sua tutela e cuidados com a qual desenvolverá uma relação de confiança e intimidade. Na escola reina o Conselho Estudantil, Yamayurikai sob comando das três “rosas”: Rosa Foetida, Rosa Gigantea a e Rosa Chinesis. Uma moça logo chama-lhe a atenção e admiração, a irmãzinha, rosa en bouton de Rosa Chinesis, Sachiko Ogasawara, atrai a novata Yumi Fukuzawa como uma pequena abelha ao néctar. Ao longo de uma série de acontecimentos, Yumi acaba tornado-se a irmãzinha, ... petite soeur de Sachiko e esta sua grande soeur.
Maria Sama Ga Miteru, ou Marimite originalmente uma light novel adaptada primeiramente para anime, depois para mangá, bebe no gênero Class S japonês atualizando-o para o formato Shoujo, “anime para meninas” moderno. Inspirado pelo impacto de obras como por exemplo o clássico proto-feminista norteamericano Mulherzinhas ou Adoráveis Mulheres como tradicionalizou-se intitular suas numerosas adaptações cinematográficas no Brasil, o Class S representa “amizades românticas” femininas, tropo muito recorrente em animes, em especial nos Shoujo, mas que provavelmente encontra em Maria Sama Ga Miteru sua expressão moderna mais pura.
Sendo um Class S, e não um Shoujo-Ai ou Yuri, generos explicitamente sáficos, embora não necessariamente voltados para o público sáfico, Maria Sama Ga Miteru raramente se torna explicitamente romântico, mas ao mesmo tempo, ao focar exclusivamente no desenvolvimento platônico da intimidade e florescimento mútuo de sentimentos entre as garotas, não somente petite soeur e grand soeur, mas das próprias irmãzinhas entre si ou das famosas rosas entre si, por exemplo, além das garotas de fora do conselho estudantil, acaba por atingir uma profundidade que por vezes um Yuri ou Shoujo-Ai voltado para um público mais amplo, ou até mesmo masculino, tendo de recorrer muito mais ao fanservice, teria maiores dificuldades em realizar, embora sem dúvida existam Yuris explícitos maravilhosos. Dito isso, existe uma personagem explicitamente lésbica em Marimite, Sei Sato, a Rosa Gigantea do Conselho Estudantil.
Um anime poético e contemplativo, que nos volta para dentro e a para a fonte de reciprocidade de onde brotaram todos nossos afetos por outras mulheres, irmãs, amigas, namoradas e amantes.

This is going to be a quick one, a little pit-stop as I finish the first season. I'll shy away from story details for now, because there's still so much to go. That said, 13 episodes in, this is definitely shaping up to be a gentle but incredibly satisfying series.

Part of it is the smaller details. There's a stiltedness to the dialogue and the general tone of conversations, which sounds like a criticism but in reality is the opposite; the stuffiness makes the show feel tonally akin to the writing of authors like Jane Austen, who I love. Absolutely, a queer-as-hell Austen-esque story is ... hitting the right beats for me.

It's story has definitely been on the simpler side; it hasn't pulled too much in the way of big twists, and while I think it would be entirely unfair to say that the show lacks tension, the stakes definitely feel small-scale. That isn't a bad thing, per se, it definitely works for the story, but it'll be interesting to see whether the rest of the show ramps this up at all.

The main downside is the animation; my feelings on mid-2000s animation are well-recorded at this point, and here it isn't helped by the fact that in the present day, with more advancement in digital animation, Studio Deen are hardly known for their high production values, so a show this much older has no chance of being anything more than practical and generally mediocre.

That said, the characters keep the show well and truly moving. With series composition by Reiko Yoshida (writer of my favourite movie of all time, and plenty of other work I really enjoyed), the characters feel authentic, likeable and complex. Yes, there's that stuffiness to most of the characters, but they're always clearly more than polite and poised. They've all got clear flaws, all got things they're clearly missing from their lives, and also all just a little bit weird in their own ways. It keeps a perfect balance between the high status they hold in the school and the reality that they're people with plenty of growing to do.

Overall, a great start to a series I wasn't entirely convinced by going in. Let's see if it can keep the momentum going into the rest of the show...

It's good, but it's too slow. The lovers are treated like best friends, even though one of them is already engaged. 💀

Initially, I thought it looked so much like my dear brother. During the first episode, I became confused because it seemed like I had already seen it before. It's almost identical. Hopefully, the rest of the story will develop differently.

The characters are quite basic. I mean, there's the sweet girl, the cold one, the tomboy – and that's it.

I'm looking forward to the next season to see what more can happen, but I'm only watching because it's a classic in sapphic anime.
