Kamisama Hajimemashita

High schooler Nanami Momozono has quite a few problems of late, beginning with her absentee father being in such extreme debt that they lose everything. Downtrodden and homeless, she runs into a man being harassed by a dog. After helping him, she explains her situation, and to her surprise, he offers her his home in gratitude. But when she discovers that said home is a rundown shrine, she tries to leave; however, she is caught by two shrine spirits and a fox familiar named Tomoe. They mistake her for the man Nanami rescued—the land god of the shrine, Mikage. Realizing that Mikage must have sent her there as a replacement god, Tomoe leaves abruptly, refusing to serve a human.

Rather than going back to being homeless, Nanami immerses herself in her divine duties. But if she must keep things running smoothly, she will need the help of a certain hot-headed fox. In her fumbling attempt to seek out Tomoe, she lands in trouble and ends up sealing a contract with him. Now the two must traverse the path of godhood together as god and familiar; but it will not be easy, for new threats arise in the form of a youkai who wants to devour the girl, a snake that wants to marry her, and Nanami's own unexpected feelings for her new familiar.

As a fan of shoujo anime, I obviously HAD to watch Kamisama Hajimemashita! And it didnt't disappoint me, I had fun watching it. But to be honest it wasn't the best anime ever.

Art/Animation (6/10)
Nothing too crazy, the art style is pretty (nothing out of the ordinary though) and I like the character designs, especially Tomoe and Kurama are really pretty and unique characters.

Sound (8/10)
Reallllyyy love the OP and the ED, they're so catchy! The OP got added to my Spotify playlist immediately.

Story (7/10)
The premise of the anime is interesting and cute, it's definitely something different than the usual shoujo anime. I liked that it's about ... Japanese mythology and found that interesting and fun to watch! But the story line itself is kind of forgettable. I enjoyed it and it didn't get boring, but I won't remember much about the story line after a month or two unfortunately.

Characters (7/10)
Kamisama Hajimemashita got a few fun characters that make a great cast for an anime. Tomoe, Mizuki and Kurama are fun to watch, I enjoyed them a lot. Though I think the female MC, Nanami, could've been a bit more interesting. I liked her, she was cute, but at the end of the day she was your ordinary (kind of boring?) shoujo main character, and I think that she was underdeveloped as a character. She's got much more potential than what was presented in the anime!

Overall (7/10)
If you like shoujo anime I'm sure you will enjoy Kamisama Hajimemashita! It's a cute and short show with an adorable cast and it's fun to watch. But it isn't that special, and kind of forgettable after you've finished it. It doesn't realllly stand out from the other shoujo anime, except in the aspect that it revolves around Japanese mythology.

Mixed Feelings

I came into this one with very high hopes and expectations. I left feeling happy that it was over.

I honestly expected a lot more from this one. Aside from a chuckle here or there, the jokes fell completely flat. The humor was barely palatable and was for the most part unrefined and obnoxious. Actually, obnoxious is the perfect descriptor for Kamisama Kiss, the first word that springs to mind if asked to describe the series. The romance, if you could even call it that, was contrived and was as tropey as they come. Absolutely nothing in this series felt original.

What can I say nice about ... this series?.. The art was nice I guess, although nothing special for the era. The OST fit the mood pretty well. But seriously, nothing about this show was well written.

Not really sure how this Shoujo has such a higher rating than Snow White with the red hair, or Yona of the dawn.

Story 5/10
Usual episodic style with a spattering of continuance in there which is usually a fine formula. But the problem is that the episodes themselves are quite boring and actually a bit of a trudge sometimes. There are moments where it makes you feel like 'ah, now it's going to get good' and then plummets back to dull.

Art/Animation 4/10
Surprising this animation comes from the 2010's when the style (and humor, but I digress) seems like its from 1999

Characters 4/10
The more you get ... to know Tomoe is probably the only interesting part and saving grace. Before getting his backstory he comes across as the generic 'tough love' style servant, but even as generic he is decently done. The rest of the characters though might as well be pieces of boiled pasta and you're trying to tell them apart.

Overall I'd give it a 4. In my personal list I gave it a 6 just because of those 'moments' I mentioned where I felt like this could be more, but as a review I think 4 is plenty as the anime itself is very boring. Especially as a love story because to be quite honest, this is pretty bad and really makes me wonder why on earth this is so highly rated. As though people rated it after the emotional payoff and not on the seasons as wholes.
