Both of the main characters, Lupin and Ryo, are loveable, goofy perverts who are actually really talented at other things. Ryo is great at handling a gun, while Lupin is great at stealing things.
Lupin has more of a cartoony look to it's characters, while the characters in City Hunter look somewhat realistic. Despite the differing art styles, both shows end up having a very similar tone.
In both shows, there ends up being many similar action-packed situations, which usually also somehow involve beautiful women, and the main character lusting over them / getting manipulated or tricked by them.

Space☆Dandy addpermalink

Lupin III: Part II was one of Adult Swim's first anime, and a great choice. In 2013, we see Space☆Dandy simulcast on AS. Space☆Dandy's main character is similar to Lupin in that they're both tall, lanky men with black hair. Both enjoy women at times and gentlemen in most others...and top their fields in seeking out rare treasures while the show goes on in an over-the-top way with a focus on gorgeous women and outrageous treasure/aliens. They're both extremely '70s-tastic and unapologetic about it.

  Both Cobra and Lupin both share an identical personality (silly, playful, clever, smart, and serious when they have to be). Most episodes from Space Adventure Cobra are episodic or are a 3-5 episode arc (although almost all he does is fight space pirates), but its mostly none-linear as is with Lupin III who also does the whole, "one mission an episode" thing with small arcs here and there.

Episodical stories of a protagonist on the bad side of law, as the plot follows him executing his plans to get the targed. Just in once case the deed is theft while in the other case it's murder.

If you watched one for the "Abridged Series" vibe early 2000s goofy dub, then you'll likely enjoy the other. Lupin III part 2 is an episodic series and it doesn't matter what order you watch it but know that only the first 79 episodes were dubbed!

Cinderella Boy addpermalink

Created by Monkey Punch, Lupin The 3rd & Cinderella Boy offers the episodic adventures of thieves & private detectives while maintaining similar character designs. In my viewpoint, if you ever wanted to see a Lupin III anime with greater focus on Lupin & Fujiko then Cinderella Boy is the closest story you're going to get.

These shows are quite different in substance, but seem to give the same overall feel. Ryo has a fairly similar personality to Lupin, and generally runs around thwarting the evil villains' plot in some quirky way; of course, not without hitting on a few stray women.

These two series are the best in the ultra long anime adventure genre. They have the most funny and memorable hero: Lupin & Luffy. You can not guess which one is the silliest of them but you will definitely know who inspired the most recent monkey. Their respective crew are both contains such enigmatic characters as: Goemon&Zoro, Jigen&Sanji, Fujiko&Nami etc. Both crew journeys the world together and they make history as they go both in their and in our universe!

Both star a thief who's always being hunted by the police, and especially one particular detective that won't sleep until their prey is captured and in jail.
