Guilty Crown

On December 24, 2029—the day colloquially known as the "Lost Christmas"—the Apocalypse Virus spread across Japan, bringing death to its citizens and plunging the country into utter chaos. In an effort to establish order, the United Nations sends the GHQ to assist with the crisis by containing the outbreak while removing all political autonomy in the process. A decade later, the country still lives under their control, unable to break free from their draconian rule.

Frustrated with the state of the nation, a resistance group named the Funeral Parlor aims to liberate Japan from the GHQ. Led by the charismatic Gai Tsutsugami, the group plots to steal a vial containing the "Void Genome" to further their goals. The vial falls into the hands of internet vocalist Inori Yuzuriha, who ends up being hunted by the GHQ's Anti-Bodies forces. Having nowhere to go, she seeks refuge in a warehouse where she meets Shuu Ouma—a socially awkward high school student who is a huge fan of her music.

Shuu gets dragged into the conflict the moment he rescues Inori, and the Void Genome shatters in his hand, granting him the "Power of the Kings." While learning how to control his grand new ability, Shuu must now fight to liberate Japan from its cruel oppressors.

Guilty Crown is a typical anime from the early 2010's. The apocalypse happens in the near future and people get powers in order to prevent it from happening while another group tries to end the world. The art is incredible, I love the OST, the action scenes are great, overall it's quite enjoyable.

Getting that out the way, I think the way people think about this anime is very interesting and strange. It seems as when the anime just aired other reviewers saw it as a "blatant cash grap", a "predictable plotline" and "unoriginal". However, as time had moved on, reviews in the 2020's see the ... negatives as more with the pacing and the unnecessary plot twist of the second half.

Could it be that anime fans' priority has changed over time? The amount of isekais has made us dull to these supposedly "clichéd" plots? Maybe it's just that this kind of settings are not as popular today as they were before? It just fascinates me how different reviews in 2011 and 2012 have changed compared to now with it being 10 folds more positive.

I could also just be thinking about it too much. Maybe reviews of today are of the more casual audience that care less about specifics like those who watched while airing. For me, I also stand with those more recent reviews. The pacing is for sure my biggest negative about this show. You get thrown in a ton of characters at once that you don't really know about and then they just want to ease you in later. I did not find the plot or setting bland, it had an interesting twist in the 2nd half. That said, it felt like they went too far like with the first season of SAO.

MyAnimeList truly is a great archive of people's thoughts on anime while they were airing, when they just finished, and years after that. People's tastes change and general opinion on several shows change as well. Hindsight is 20/20 but we could also be changed by our ever evolving environment.

Mixed Feelings

“Guilty Crown” is a visually stunning and emotionally charged anime that takes you on a rollercoaster of action, drama, and suspense. The series is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a deadly virus has ravaged Japan, earning it a well-deserved rating of 8/10 for its setting. This dystopian backdrop provides a rich and intriguing environment for the unfolding story.

The animation is top-notch, with beautifully designed characters and breathtaking action sequences that keep you on the edge of your seat.

The story revolves around Shu Ouma, a high school loner who obtains a mysterious power that allows him to extract weapons from people’s hearts. As he becomes ... entangled in the conflict between rebel forces and the oppressive government, he must make difficult choices that have far-reaching consequences. The character development, while engaging, is rated at 5/10, reflecting the series’ limitations in this aspect. The characters, while well-designed, may feel somewhat cliche in their development.

I will give it to “Guilty Crown” for its phenomenal soundtrack, composed by Hiroyuki Sawano. The music perfectly complements the intense and emotional moments of the series, enhancing the overall experience.

However, “Guilty Crown” does have its share of criticisms. Some viewers, including myself, found the plot to be a bit lacking, earning it a rating of 6/10. It’s not uncommon for viewers to draw comparisons to “Code Geass,” as there are similarities in the power dynamics and the struggle for control, but “Guilty Crown” does have its unique elements as well. Additionally, the story pacing can be inconsistent.

In conclusion, “Guilty Crown” is a must-watch for fans of action-packed, visually captivating anime with a touch of romance and drama, especially for those who enjoy post-apocalyptic settings. While it has its flaws in terms of plot and character development, it’s a memorable series with moments that will stay with you long after you’ve finished watching.

This show is had some very strong points in the first half, but then it just went downhill and got lost up its own butt. It looks like it was meant to end in episode 12. Its the second half where everything falls apart. I will try to do this without a wall of text. So I will just mention some things about it that are impossible to ignore. First things first, Inori is an awful character. Are we supposed to like her because she has pink hair? She has no personality, she mumbles and never shows any spark or smile. Not even one scream ... or outburst of anger, not one cocky comment. No she just mumbles and whispers. Some idiots and writers want to pretend that boring people are cool, they aren't. She acts the way your already SHY girlfriend behaved when she first met your parents. She is never relaxed, she never laughs or smiles. This character is always gloomy, skulking and sulking around, but she has pink hair!

Then there is the awful fan service. This anime has the worst fan service I have ever seen, bar none. In the most serious of moments they have to show you tits! Shu's stepmom's tits rubbing against his face when they are together. The wheelchair girl is in danger of dying, best zoom in the camera to her super enormous wobbling tits! The world is falling apart and people are crying...guess what? TITS! Tits are often shoved in your face at the same time something serious is happening. I hate fan service, but I get that some perverts like it. So if you're going to do cringy things like fan service and not do it tastefully at least do it when its time for a joke, or a funny scene.

The main villain? What? Who? Was it the virus/entity? His dad? The commander? The commander's son? Shu's frenemies? Shu's enemies? Shu's friends? The timer keeper? Shu's sister? Guy? I have no idea what in the world I just got myself to watch.
