Kamisama no Memochou

Narumi Fujishima may seem like a normal high school student at first glance, but in reality he is a pessimistic outsider. Due to his father's work, he had to constantly transfer schools, and thus he has never managed to become a part of society. When he is forced to join the gardening club by his cheerful classmate Ayaka Shinozaki, Narumi encounters the genius hacker Alice, who lives in isolation above Hanamaru, the ramen shop where Ayaka works part-time. He then discovers that Alice is running a special private detective agency, and that all her professional associates refer to themselves as "NEET"s: Not in Education, Employment, or Training.

Joining the NEET detective agency due to his personal connection with a criminal case, Narumi finds himself entangled in a world of dangerous investigations conducted by the ill-assorted group of detectives, all the while trying to track down the crime syndicate which seems to have mysterious ties to Alice.

Originally discovered this anime thanks to Kyosuke_Kosaka's recommendation for 'similar anime to Sakurako,' which ya'll know I love. This series DID NOT DISAPPOINT. TLDR: The cast of Kamisama is well rounded, characters with more depth than Sakurako's, and the ending leaves you feeling quite satisfied - no loose ends or plot holes.

Now onto the nitty gritty for anyone who might be entertained by my fan girling:
OMG the character depth! In the beginning, we're introduced to various support characters and a large cast, but we gradually get more tidbits of their own lives and personalities with every episode. There's so much humor in their dialogue that ... I'm really not sure how this is missing the comedy tag. I think the creators deliberately paced everything slowly so that the audience wouldn't be overwhelmed with the details - especially while solving detective cases.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like Narumi going in, because it's a (sadly) common trope to have a male lead
a) "ordinary guy," with no special skills
b) fetishization or excessive romanticization of the females around him
c) no personality, no growth or character development
d) all the above = see 'harem' animes

Given the rise in popularity of such unattractive characters nowadays, I honestly thought Narumi was gonna be one of those 4, and if so, I'd probably drop the series.

But I was blown away. I was wrong. I was IMPRESSED.

Narumi seems pretty clueless and not exactly the most opininated person at the start. And his growth could be categorized as more reactive than proactive. But don't doubt it - it increases after each case, and soon enough. He learns to use his voice, his brain, and most importantly, his physical strength. As a woman, I gotta admit, I feel like Narumi became a real man over the course of the series, and there's nothing more attractive than that. His character arc reminded me of Zuko from ATLA, that's how good the transformation was - albeit ATLA's being much longer and more significant.

I'd even say that I liked Narumi as much as I liked Alice. Possibly even more than Alice, which typically doesn't happen when I watch shows with strong female protagonists. Narumi just felt like a 'real person' with human habits and emotions, and we see detective cases differently, precisely because of how human - and empathetic - he is towards others. His presence becomes the 'why' behind 'why are we doing this?', 'why do we care?', 'Why should we care?'.
Because HE begins to care and show that he gives a damn about the people they're trying to help.

The other thing I really like about Narumi is that even though there's light fan service moments, he doesn't notice, or take advantage of them. Compared to most anime out there, it's refreshing and practically record-breaking. It's just really positive and respectful towards female watchers imo, as if... the studio has (gasp) women working in it too! This is the primary reason why I think this anime is much better than Sakurako. It actually stays focused on the storyline. There's no excessive romance distracting the audience from the real plot. And the female characters who are presented, are far from one dimensional.

The pacing could've been a little faster, but after completing the series, I can see why they wanted to spend time on just a few cases. For them, it seemed more about quality than quantity. And giving more time to each case meant the studio, and writers, likely had greater flexibility in making each plot richer - it's fantastically done. It's because it's so well done, that I know I could've kept watching this series for a long time. I would've been happy if there were 2 - 5 seasons, so it's a little disappointing we only got 12 episodes.

But, despite that, the last episode is definitely what made me give them a 10. Unexpected case details, depth, and satisfying communication between all the characters to wrap it all up. It left me feeling very fulfilled. I'm really glad and grateful to have watched such a powerful and meaningful series, and highly recommend it to others too!

Mixed Feelings

Theres a joke at the start of the show towards the MC where one says ” youre still here?” And then makes a comment how bland face and precense he has that they forgot him. This works very well towards this show aswell. Its not bad. Just very forgettable. Which is why i cant refer to him as anything else than MC because ive forgotten his name despite finishing the show just earlier today.

This is your standard NEET gang and story. Its mentioned as mystery or detective stuff but its so barebones its not even worth to be put in that genre imo. Its ... more just standard Otaku/NEET slice of life/”humor” Theres tons of these shows and most does it better. Music is nothing special. Characters arent memorable or likeable. Just watch, and then forget.

Kamisama no Memochō is a series that I bought on a whim from a RightStuf sale and even though the pacing can be glacial, the last three episodes rewarded the audience's lenience, after having to sit through many scenes with alienating dialogue and lackluster writing. Moments with the criminally cute Yūko and her interactions with the "NEET"s could be charming, though sometimes, it felt as if Kamisama no Memochō may have been too ambitious and overwrought with dangling strings to really be effective as a single cour anime!

—Story/Characters

Instantly, I found the character of Yūko to ... be immensely interesting, not only is she a government-level security hacker, but she also manages to survive her day-to-day existence, despite being horribly emaciated, devouring nothing but junk food, and having chronic insomnia! The light novels may have remedied this issue in later volumes, but my biggest problem with Yūko's characterization is that we don't get a deeper dive into her personality, so her quirks pretty much make her the show's mascot. I think I was particularly harsh on this point of opprobrium, because I have seen similar series where the small genius girl's backstory and personality is further explored, there are good examples of this with Victorique de Blois in "Gosick" and Dalian in "Dantalian no Shoka"!

Some of the arcs ranged from "I'm going to fall asleep if this arc gets any more boring" to "I am forcing myself to sit through this arc, in a Clockwork Orange fashion" — I thought that Meo's story with her father was decent, but my brain was clocked off a lot of the time during Sōichirō Hinamura's story. I am biased though, I am not the biggest fan of gangster or yakuza-centric stories, so it might have been my personal preference that led me to prefer Meo's narrative, rather than the arc of Daisuke Ono's character, Sōichirō!

The best episodes were the last three, in my opinion, it was refreshing to see that the girl-next-door, who no one would really expect to be a pivotal character, Ayaka Shinozaki, actually has major psychological issues and due to her dependency on the protagonist, Narumi Fujishimi, her issues get much worse when he starts spending all of his time with the "NEET"s! I also found it fascinating that the drug that they had been researching throughout the series, "Angel's Fix", became a crucial part of investigating Ayaka's sudden jump, since there had been signs of it being planted in the gardening club's pavilion!

Ayaka's feelings are delicately made clear by the flowers that she had planted on the balcony, while thinking of Narumi, and in the very end, she is shown to wake up from her coma — that had been induced by her "jump"! The ending is very sentimental and it even seems like more of Yūko's stoic side is shown, apart from her brand of moe neuroticisms. If the rest of Kamisama no Memochō had been more like the final three episodes, I would have enjoyed it much more! But, because of the strong conclusion, I'm curious about how the light novels will continue from where the anime left off.

Commentary: It seems that with Mr. Sakurabi's filmography, I am more privy to his older, more gothic horror shows, like "Shigofumi" and "Shingetsutan Tsukihime" — while there were aspects of Kamisama no Memochō and Flying Witch that I could appreciate, both of them slogged with their pacing and approach to incorporating meaningful character moments. Both of them felt empty, in different ways, though there were certain narrative devices that I thought were neat in Kamisama no Memochō, but I attribute that to the source material more than the quality of the production values. From what I've seen of Mr. Sakurabi's directing positions, he's a straight down the middle "hit-or-miss"-type of guy. Decent work on Kamisama no Memochō, but not the best, out of his list of projects!

Commentary: As you would expect from Yui Ogura, who is voicing our frail NEET heroine (that lives off of a diet of drinking Dr. DoKuPe)... she was able to make Yūko Shionji an absolutely adorable character! Ms. Ogura always does a great job at making characters sound impossibly cute. I would compare the role to her performances as Rom ("Chōjigen Game Neptune") and Hinata Hakamada ("Rō-Kyū-Bu!"), who are both very endearing, each with their own small stubborn streak! Amazing work, as always!

Commentary: Yes, Sword Art Online's "Kirito" voices the protagonist to this series! Mr. Matsuoka typically sounds more lively, especially in some of his latest roles as Inosuke Hashibira ("Kimetsu no Yaiba") and Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti ("Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu"), but the writing in Kamisama no Memochō makes his character seem like a complete wallflower. Yes, Narumi Fujishima's reaction to the strange detective agency can be amusing at times, but the role is really muted, compared to more of his break-out hits. Excellent seiyū, in a not-so-great series.

Commentary: Ms. Kayano has the same predicament as Yoshitsugu Matsuoka ("Kirito") does in her role. She has a very soft, angelic-sounding voice, but her talent is squandered in a character that only gets a bit of limelight towards the very end of the show. Incredible seiyū, though she isn't very prevalent throughout most of the series, episode ten adds a new layer of complexity to her character!

Commentary: Mr. Ono can have a very emotionally riveting presence, I remember that I teared up during his performance as Masaru Katō in "Gantz:O" — but, although this character had some powerful emotional beats in one or two episodes, the character of Sōichirō Hinamura felt relatively empty, by comparison! This is the case of an outstanding actor, in a not-so-great role!

Commentary: Interesting tidbit, before I get into the voice acting, the most famous "Míng Lǐ" (in real life) is known for innovating a computer science algorithmic theory called the Kolmogorov complexity. I thought that was neat, given the use of hacking and algorithms in the series! I don't know if this was an intentional reference, but it's interesting, nonetheless! Ms. Nabatame, the original casting choice for Arcueid Brunestud, has some of the strongest characters moments and presence in the entire show! I really enjoyed her tough demeanor, and the way that she was both commanding and a responsible ramen shop owner made her instantly one of the most likable! Iconic seiyū, cast in a rightfully badass role!

Though uncontroversially weak in most of its delivery, the way the ending wraps up the Ayaka's silent struggles and some other character moments made it a nice little watch, even if it's just a casual viewing. I may have enjoyed more because I have a unifiable desire for a series that involve solving crimes and an element of mystery, that's why I can't get enough of "Detective Conan"! Even if I manage to binge one-hundred episodes in a single sitting, I don't think I could ever get tired of it! I rate Kamisama no Memochō a 4/10, but suggest picking it up if you want something that's laid back and has a decently cathartic ending!
