Both feature a cast of tanuki in a modern setting.

Both are bitter-sweet stories of creatures from Japanese folklore, existing or brought to the modern age. In both, society and the media reaction is important, reacting realistically to the creatures' presence, and their actions toward the media.

Both are Ghibli films which feature mythological creatures that live in forests. Even though the events are set in different eras, both depict the conflict between the natural world and industrial civilization, giving a positive message for the preservation of nature.

Both involve shapeshifters trying to scare humans so they will stop them from destroying their forest.

- Lots of references to well-known traditional Japanese paintings such as 36 Views of Mount Fuji and The Witch and the Skeleton Spectre. Featured works are more general in Sarusuberi and more mythology-focused in Ponpoko. - Magical realism. Clever interweaving of fictional aspects into a real-world historical setting. - Heavy use of traditional songs and music. This is more evident in Ponpoko, featuring lots of Japanese folk songs to invoke nostalgia in the post-Showa audience. Sarusuberi is more adventurous and plays around with the traditional sounds to create something fresh. - Both films are set in Tokyo/Edo. - Both films document the societal changes taking place in the  read more

Both Tenki no Ko and Pom Poko address environmental issues as well as the changing role of classic folklore in modern society. Both films share mixed outlook that's both optimistic and pessimistic on these issues. Anther theme they share is that of family. While Tenki no Ko looks more at a runaway who chooses his own family, Pom Poko shows the closeness of a tanuki family.

Both mediums tell the tale of mischief and trickery through the lives of the tanuki. It also entails themes of survival within cultural change, how they attempt to get by with their old tactics amongst the modern people. The movie expands more on that theme, and the TV show's first episode uses it to set the vibe, giving our MC that motivation from that point onward.

Both are kid-friendly Ghibli movies, featuring lovable animals which live in forests. They are movies with a serene tone, beautiful landscapes, and positive messages for children.

While ponpoko revolves around the issue of humans polluting nature, if you liked the idea of animals transforming into humans, then wolf children is also perfect for you! However, wolf children has another layer to it that ponpoko doesn't have: it also tackles the question of whether or not the two children, Ame and yuki, are human or wolf. This makes wolf children more complex, and can be better appreciated by an older audience.

Both Arjuna and Pom Poko have strong morales about the enviroment . Arjuna is more about farming and plants and what's safe to eat (the answer to that last one being nothing by the way) while Pom Poko is about how we shouldn't build on homeland of animals. Arjuna is also way more preachy while Pom Poko's morale is part of the story naturally and thus seems better. Arjuna also has more action, but they both have great animation and music.

Nausicca has a similar environmentalism themes, but much, much less heavy handed than Pom Poko. Done by the same studio as well.

Kawa no Hikari is very similar to Ponpoko (Pom Poko). Both have an environmental message that points to how mankind's industrialization can have devastating effects on wildlife. Furthermore, they take place in beautiful natural scenery, accompanied by great art, and involve the journey of non-human animals. Kawa no Hikari is a bit more poetic since the source material, a novel, was written by a reputable author.

Both are about animals having to disguise themselves as humans in order to fit in and stay alive. They are even both canines. Wolf's Rain is about wolves while Pom Poko is about Tankukis(raccoon dogs), a type of asian canine. Pom Poko has a lot of humor though, while Wolf's Rain is very dark.

In both are many traditional Japanese ghosts and myths. They have a really good animation too. :)

Animal Treasure Island is considered a "pre-Ghibli" film. If you liked it, then perhaps you would enjoy the Ghibli film Pom Poko. Both films have talking animals.
