Both shows are about the lives of the family of tanuki's as they meddle and have fun with human society.
Both feature tanuki and present how they deal with living amongst humans and the complications that arise in doing so. Also shows the conflicts within the species too.

Boths shows are stories about mythical creatures (Bakedanuki) co-existing with humans and dealing with human society. Aside from the obvious raccoon dog connection, the way tanukis are portrayed by both pieces of work are also very similar and in-line with folklore traditions. They are shown as mischievous creatures with great powers, but are ultimately unruly and simple animals at heart; as such Ponpoko and Uchouten Kazoku both deal with what would normally be very sombre themes in a human orientated show (such as death) in an incredibly light-hearted and nonchalant way.
