I'm glad a s2 was announced, there's a possibility it might fix a lot of my gripes with this first cour.
I'm a big hyouka fan and knowing this is from the same author, I can't help but compare the two. I think that while, yes, both characters are intentionally flawed, there's not much reason for us to like them. Especially not osanai. The series seems to not want to focus on that much at first and relies on a lot of small mysteries like hyouka which works but with the latter half having an arc with higher stakes and these last two episodes revealing the
...
twist behind it, I found myself really disliking osanai because not only has she not had much growth but she's inherently in the wrong. And if you are coming to this, it is a mystery series first, however, I do feel having more compelling leads would help as hotaro, eru, mayaka, and fubuke do contribute to what made hyouka so compelling.
Obviously it's not like that's supposed to be unclear but she also tries to say kobato is just as bad when no, she put 3 people away. I'm hoping they both have more character growth in the second part because honestly, everything else about the series is pretty immaculate in terms of score, animation, direction, etc. it's just the main two that have been a sore spot for me I have not read the source material so I could end up being disappointed by the second cour.
I do hope that folks who liked this and haven't seen hyouka go and watch it, considering this has partially been a hyouka review. Definitely one of kyoani's best imo.
