So, I would like to reviews this in 2 ways: for new fans first watching and for old fans of the franchise.
First, for new fans: the overall score would be around 8+/10.
The story is nothing too special, but it makes good use of the characters to tell a charming story. Also, the story is a standalone so you don't have to watch other series of the franchise to enjoy it 100%. Moving on, the characters themselves are pretty diverse and relatable, and watching them interact is very fun, amusing and heartwarming!
Now, as an anime about idol, the important thing here is the music and
...
the art. And lemme tell you, Superstar!! really aces both of that. The art is clean but still unique, and the songs are great! Even though I don't like an insert song, I can't deny the opening and ending songs are amazing, as they capture the feeling of the show perfectly!!
So, overall, the anime is pretty enjoyable and anyone can enjoy it, as long as they don't hate anime idol.
Second, for the old fans: 10000000/10
Holy f*ck guys the show is amazing, stellar even!!! You should definitely watch it now if you enjoy the original series and love µ's. Seriously, I mean it.
At first, I had my doubt about whether or not this will live up to the Love Live legacy, as it only stars 5 characters instead of 9 like other series. I am glad to say that I no longer doubt it. They're all so charming in their own ways, and fit together seamlessly, they're absolutely amazing as a group!
Also, having only 5 members mean that they have more time to explore each members more, and it's really great because it gives the characters more depth and make them more relatable.
Imo, the story and the characters are the perfect mix between School Idol Project and Sunshine. They feel real, and yet they still have that small supernatural/unrealistic thingy that the original series had. To quote someone else's comments "A LL anime that have people dancing in the street is a good LL anime" lol. Furthermore, the funny moments are perfectly balanced with the more dramatic and emotional scenes.
About the art and sound...
Art: it's much "cleaner" than the original art, but still retains that "Love Live"-ness that makes it unique. Also the 3D model are much better now!
Sound: the only reason I gave it a 9 is because I'm a picky listener, I don't like an insert song. But overall, the music is marvelous/すばらし!! I'm not sure why but I feel nostalgic listening to the opening and ending songs. (Also, Kanon songs in ep1 made me cry)
Overall, it's an outstanding show in the franchise, so do yourself a favor and watch it!!!!
