Furi Kuri, also known as FLCL (how do you pronunce it? 8D) is made of 6 OVAs, by Gainax; aired in the beginnings of 2000 to the end of March, 2001. These six OVAs are, in my opinion, the greatest thing that Gainax has ever created (despite Gurren-Lagann, because FLCL is way older than it).
You could say my opinion is biased, but when it comes to criticize the anime, you can indeed say that the art is bad-drawn, a poor style, etc. In my opinion, it fits everything correctly. What I mean is that through it, you can see that the drawing style has an
...
effect on the animation: the effect of the real things considering Naota's age with his fabulous city and a more fabulous helper, Haruhara Haruko.
Story: 9
The story deserves a 9. I would put a complete 10, but then again this series had its weak spots during the first episode, because it was a complete TRAINWRECK of things coming out of nothing. Yeah, the first episode can be a turn down, but don't worry, because the story flows well as you watch the next episodes. Basically, Naota had a normal and boring life in his city, when a weird woman appears and she starts making the life of Naota, a pretty good one to live.
Art: 8
Well, here comes the fantastic yet weak spot of FLCL. The art can be judged by different instances of the series, like when the manga art style appears in the first episode, to the excellent flow of things when the animation requires a good art, like the battle scenes, which are excellent by the way; another way of judging it could be the strange sequence of things happening while Naota makes mistakes...I could call it a special animation.
Special because it makes the things go slower and so the art becomes prettier...while sometimes it can be gross to see somethings (like in episode 3)...Mostly, the art was a key function in this anime.
Sound: 10 because I can't put 9001
The best part of the series: the sound and music.
What can I say; the pillows are from another world, galaxy, dimension, etc. When I first watched FLCL, I only watched it because of the great story. Yeah, that was the first time. I decided to rewatch and focus in every aspect of it. While watching the last episode, you could feel the song, the jrock at its best stage with LAST DINOSAUR and I think I can as the last songs...it was just too much for me (for the first and second time). I could see Naota feelings as his thoughts...the pillows drove me nuts in the last ep.
The first episode of FLCL starts with ONE LIFE, edited vers. for FLCL. Great song, because it goes with the flow of the starting scene. Later then, in the manga art, with Come down as a good left-over. Nightmare also appears in this episode, as in the following eps. too. As for episode 2, I can remember the CAN YOU FEEEEEEEEEEEL...Hybrid Rainbow. Yeah, awesome.
As for episodes 3 and 4, songs were also fantastically well put. For episode 3, they decided to go again for Nightmare and Advice, with RUNNERS HIGH as the ending song for various episodes. Episode 4 had Stalker with RUNNERS HIGH again, and, as the ending bgm, it had Crazy Sunshine, goodepicsong.
Now, the real bussiness. Episode 5 and 6 were the best out of the 6 OVAs of this series. Not to be biased, but Blues Drive Monster, LAST DINOSAUR and [I think I can were simply spectacular within the series. The jrock manifested as it best, the perfect guitar...I don't know you, but these 3 songs were excellent.
As for the characters and the enjoyment, both 10. Why? Because you have to feel the character. You gotta feel Naota and Haruko in order to enjoy this anime to the max. I personally prefer the pillows, but...well.
