Both are short and compact fantasy shojo that don't lose any of their epic fantasy vision from their short length

Soredemo Boku wa Kimi ga Suki

Both series take place over a large chunk of time (15ish years) and show the leads falling in and out of love and relationships and show that it's ok and natural.

Kanata no Astra

Both are about a group of students who must survive on a spaceship for a period of time as part of what seems to be some secret ability test. Both groups might also have a saboteur making the test interesting.

If you liked
Banana Fish
add
...then you might like
Kizuna
add

Both series involve gay gangsters. Kizuna is far more open about it with less focus on yakuza, while Banana Fish has more mafia drama and isn't explicit, but fans of one should definitely check the other out.

While completely different in setting, the somewhat goofy tone combined with action is very similar. The leads are quite similar too, with a flippant attitude towards their goals and tendency to get distracted by food (Lina) and vacations (Kei and Yuri) And they all don't seem to care how many things get destroyed in their wake, they're all queens of destruction.

Chikyuu Bouei Kigyou Dai-Guard

In both series, each group has to deal with the consequences that happen when they accidentally destroy public and private property while fighting. Mecha damage and weapons cost money as well

If you liked
Digimon Savers
add
...then you might like
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
add

Lots and lots of hotblooded manliness emanates strongly from both series. Be it Kamina challenging a mecha with a katana or Marcus' constant punching of mega-level digimon in the face, everyone is always willing to go over the top with their fists to get their point across. Also, the power of friendship, the awesomeness of humanity, and the awesomeness of the individual are all very prevalent in both series and make them both very pro-human. Data Squad/Savers is the more GAR Digimon series and TTGL is the most GAR mecha series, GAR fans should enjoy both.

Towa no Quon 1: Utakata no Kaben

The whole super-old-but-looks-like-a-teen super powered psychic thing is definitely similar. Also, Locke and Quon are both nice guys who would rather help people that mass slaughter people with their immense psychic powers.

Basara
add

Both Basara and FMA are epic fantasy quests filled with loads and loads of characters, lots of travel, political intrigue, and awesome fight scenes. Basara is easily the superior of the two and adds an element of romance, but if you liked one, you should check out the other.

Both provide a balanced mix slice of life and drama using the perspective of the difficulty of a youth's life as the story. They both have fairly plain character designs and a magical assistant of sorts to help the main character in their personal struggles.

Uchuu no Kishi Tekkaman Blade
add

In both series, the Earth has been laid to waste by horrific bug-like monster aliens that tend to kill lots of people and be very hard to kill. Only a few people (usually our mains) have any chance at all of beating them. One of the goals of both series is to take back the Earth from the invasion.

Both are fantastic coming of age stories, the best two I've ever read, with fantastic characters and a story that will awaken the dreamer in all of us. They both even have awesome ghost mentors!

If you liked
Bokurano
add
...then you might like
Ikigami
add

Both series involve characters that know they are going to die. For Ikigami, they find out with 24 hours (sometimes less) to go, with Bokurano they simply know it will be "soon". Both series also involve the deaths of young people and how they spend their remaining time. If you liked that aspect of one, you should check out the other.

If you liked
Blue Gender
add
...then you might like
Kikou Souseiki Mospeada
add

Both series involve a small group traveling a great distance in order to get to a specific point on the globe inconveniently far from where they started while fighting an alien species that has dominated humanity. This changes halfway through Blue Gender as the focus shifts a bit, but the alien presence on Earth is still unwelcome. Blue Gender is the darker of the two series, but if you enjoyed the traveling a great distance while fighting things that want to kill you aspect, you should consider giving the other one a shot.

Sanctuary
add

Banana Fish and Sanctuary are both political thrillers where you just can't turn the pages fast enough! Banana Fish deals with mafia and inner city gang politics in America while Sanctuary deals with the Japanese Diet and Yakuza in Japan. Both series are page turners as words and simple expressions are just as engrossing as gun fights. In addition, both series have two males whose relationship to each other could best be described as "bromantic" or "heterosexual life partners". If you liked one, you should check out the other.

Both OVAs were cheap licenses with hilariously bad dubs and terrible stories. They were both even licensed by the same company. They're also both good to watch with a bunch of friends while playing drinking games to how hilariously bad they are.

Did you just see a new character on the page? Then you can expect the same fates for said characters in both series. It might not get them now, but it will catch up with them at some point. Also the "one must survive by killing all the others" thing is present in both series, as well as equipping the characters with weapons in order to help them achieve this (future versions of diaries in Mirai Nikki, random things like scythes, guns, and forks in Battle Royale). Many of the characters in both series are also pretty damn crazy.

Bunch of kids/young adults trapped on a ship with mechanical issues and other problems? Check. Suspicions on other characters that leads to all different kind of turmoil and nearly breaks apart the group and the societal structure of the community on the ship? Check. If you couldn't tell which series I was talking about with these two statements, it's because the shows are very similar and both great.

Both involve reincarnations and some past loves as well and both are from the same author so have a similar style. Other than the reincarnation the plots are vastly different so don't expect a clone of the other series either!

Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugoi yo!! Masaru-san
add

Both shows have the same type of comedy and dead pan humor set in a high school. Both involve over the top occurrences that are everyday for that school and both shows have that one normal guy who inexplicably hangs out with all the weirdos. Both are animated by top animation companies yet both shows purposely cut corners when drawing all the time and use random unrelated backgrounds. They even panel two characters talking to each other similarly. Random things might be in the screen at any given time and arrows or sounds might point them out. At one point in both shows a UFO crosses the sky. If you liked one, the other is the most similar thing to it out there.

If you liked
Mugen no Ryvius

...then you might like
Macross
add

Both feature a large population trapped on a ship forced to fend off enemies who appear to be attacking them for no apparent reason. While the society Infinite Ryvius descends into chaos, Macross' society is still maintained very well, but the similarities of having the fight off the enemy are very obvious.

If you liked
Planetes
add
...then you might like
Dosei Mansion
add

Both series are about tough futuristic jobs that sound awesome by today's standards but that your average person in the series wouldn't want to do because they are dangerous. They're both relaxing paced reads that showcase humanity's desire to be somewhere else they can see but cannot easily reach (the furthest stars in Planetes, the Earth in Saturn Apartments) and various characters reactions to said desires. They are also both "realistic" sci-fi series where things like gravity and basic science rules apply but things like giant robots and aliens are science fiction, giving their worlds a very similar vibe.

Kikou Souseiki Mospeada
add

Both series involve a world in which society now follows far more basic rules of survival and in which many of the cities are rather broken down. In Mospeada, people can still talk, but similarities between the two are uncanny. Both also involve a group traveling around to different cities and have some similar experiences among them, even if their goals are different. If you want to see more ruined cities and people living in now terrible societies, check the other out.

Terra e... (TV)
add

Both are sci-fi shojo from the 80s that take place in space. Terra e... is more epic in the scales of setting and time while They Were 11 takes place in a single space ship with fewer characters over the course of less than 3 months, but space, drama, and mystery all take the stage in both series.

While not similar in story or genre, both shows make extensive use of classical music during the show with obvious care taken to choose the perfect pieces for any given situation to heighten the mood. On occasion, both shows might even use the exact same piece differently and both very well. If classical music is your thing, check them both out.

If you liked
Fantastic Children

Boku no Chikyuu wo Mamotte
add

Both Please Save My Earth and Fantastic Children are both sci-fi series that deal with the theme of reincarnation of the main characters from lives past and how it affects them currently. They both have their own takes on things, Fantastic Children involves more fantastical science concepts while Please Save My Earth involves more psychic powers, but they both have the similar reincarnation theme. If you watched the Please Save My Earth OVA and you were upset at the blunt ending, Fantastic Children should serve your needs well. If you read the Please Save My Earth manga and want something similar, try Fantastic Children.

Historie
add

Both Historie and Buddha are about the lives of an exceptional man that actually lived at some point in history. Neither series tries to make things forcibly interesting by adding weird things that clearly don't belong (like mechs and light sabers) and are interesting just by telling the story of that person.
