Not very similar in terms of setup but the humor in both shows hits more often than it misses. If you like watching a varied cast of lovable characters acting like idiots or doing random/quirky stuff you'll most likely find something enjoyable in both shows. Very hard to dislike any character from either show since character chemistry is a big part of both. Gekkan Shoujo is only 12 episodes and easy to get into because of that, but because of its shortness someone who has watched Gintama might finnish the series in just a few hours. On the flipside: Gintama is 360+ episodes total and much more of a commitment but you get a lot more plot and a lot more attached to the characters because of that. However both are more than worth the time for those who love comedies and anime that parody other anime.
