Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster

Gunbuster was also directed by Hideaki Anno, being his first work as a full director. As you watch Gunbuster, it becomes clear that some NGE concepts and ideas were born on Gunbuster, only to be fully developed later on NGE. Gunbuster is far from being a work on the level of NGE (specially since it's only a 6 episode OVA), but if you liked NGE - specially how it was directed - then you should consider watching Gunbuster as well.

Both are episodic anime of two characters travelling together and experiencing situations where they learn more about the world and themselves. It's very likely Girl's Last Tour drew inspiration from Kino no Tabi.

Stop!! Hibari-kun!
|
Akira Toriyama and Hisashi Eguchi both influenced each other a lot during the 80's. The influence of Dr. Slump-style comedy in Stop!! Hibari-kun is glaring. Both manga were published simultaneously on Shounen Jump - Hibari-kun starting a year later - and, on this manga, it's quite clear that Eguchi tried to copy Akira Toriyama's style of writing and drawing. In some pages, it feels you're actually reading Dr. Slump. However, Hibari-kun, on it's own, is no Dr. Slump copy. Eguchi's manga main theme is Hibari-kun's crossdressing (or transgenderism, on a modern interpretation). Most jokes revolve around Hibari-kun being so pretty that, even though other people know that a man dressing and acting like a woman is wrong (according to the 80's zeitgeist), they can do nothing but accept Hibari-kun in the end. If this type of story appeals to you and you like Dr-Slump-style comedy, you definitely should read this manga and/or watch it's anime adaptation. Finally, it's interesting to notice now Akira Toriyama also got influenced later by Eguchi, specially when designing female characters. Some female characters in Dragon Ball bear striking similarities to Eguchi characters - Bulma in particular is practically an (older) carbon-copy of Hibari's younger sister!

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Bokurano's idea is quite similar to Madoka, but happening in the Mecha genre instead of Mahou Shoujo. Both of them are about kids that have their lifes changed to become "heroes" - but the story approach is much more emotionally realistic than the average and both are quite dark.
