After a long stream of random wacky light hearted anime, I finally get to one of the animes on my list for a while, "The Future Diary". This anime goes way beyond what I expected from it *cough* which was rather lacking *cough*. Now before reading this review please note that there will be a couple spoilers ahead, and but by all means enjoy reading or flaming my two cents on Mirai Nikki.
The story follows the average script with a psychological twist through the entire thing. I won't touch on the plot too much because you guys have a synopsis for that. Simply put that
...
12 people who posses diaries that have been previously recorded with future events stirs up trouble in the everyday life of the protagonist, Amano Yukiteru. Now each character are somewhat over the top, but I'll touch on that more in my characters section. Throughout the anime, the story has a unpredictable path that is constantly taking sharp turns left and right. Some may say it's bad, some may say it keeps it exciting. In my opinion it's fine, not good) but messy. Shock value sets the center stage of this anime where everything has to be exciting. The last couple of episodes really puts the cherry on top. It raised a lot of questions, but had a satisfying conclusion...? Nope. SPOILERS All the character's futures were changed for the better. You can see how each and every diary owner was intertwined with another. Yukiteru's existence in the remnants of the second world was rather unnecessary. Sure the third world is a world that everyone can enjoy (even third world Yuki), but the clip after the final ED was even more unnecessary. Final note; in the third world, who will become the successor of Deus Ex Machina as his death is inevitable?
Mirai Nikki features lots of beautiful scenes with action and scenery. Especially in the world Deus Ex Machina resides in. Throughout the anime I really enjoyed seeing how they set lightning in the various scenes. Nothing much to say here besides the animation was beautifully fluid with no parts that make me feel like punching the computer screen.
Sound is one of the most important things in a horror genre title besides shock value. The OPs and EDs were enjoyable but still not the kinds that I won't skip. The anime doesn't really incorporate sound too often to build tension, but nothing is out of place.
The characters, like i said, were all over the top (minus the first and eight diary owners). Which isn't a bad thing. Each character besides the main ones were given shoddy backstory to give them at least some sort of motive to play a part in this survival game anime. Now in my opinion, it's in the nature of these types of anime that don't follow a steady plot to have these types of throw away characters. Now for the main characters. Yukiteru remains his wimpy throughout most of the anime. Although he is wimpy, he will forgive anyone important enough to him for any reason. Yuno Gasai has the most detailed background of this story. Her live(s) revolve around Yukki's. She is nonsensical, nonnegotiable, and has an unrequited love for Yukki (until the end). Of course "the perfect yandere" that everyone knows. She has become too well known around the anime community.
I'm a mindless anime watcher. I watched it. I enjoyed it.
As for overall, I'm adding a bit so bear with me... a 9 *dramatic music plays*. I say give this anime a shot. If you like the shock value, a easy to follow story albeit not the greatest, and a sick and twisted love story then this is the anime for you! I really did enjoy watching this and I hope that you guys will put this on your list.
