Am i the only one who is disappointed?
The first part was really excellently done, and was able to develop the relationship between takaki and akari amazingly in such a short period of time. It could have even been extended into its own movie and i would have been satisfied. However, after their separation the story starts to decline.
In the second episode, takaki is the source of many of his own problems. He is always thinking of akari, but in high school he didn't send any letters, and even letters weren't necessary, as he had a phone capable of texting. It would have been easy to

stay in touch. Even when he got a job and school was no long a barrier to their relationship did he ever talk to her again. In fact, it would be so simple for them to maintain a connection throughout their school years and finally meet up after graduating that it took me a few moments to realize that the person akari was getting married to wasn't takaki. This does work both ways as well, akari should have also been able to reach to takaki throughout high school.
I believe the message in this was how their fear of the other one forgetting them was preventing them from communicating, but this message of separation would have been much better portrayed had they not been able to communicate so easily. It was kind of like making a character that is afflicted with smallpox take place in the modern world; it could make for a potentially tragic event, but the setting effectively nullifies the problem.
In the end takaki was not obsessed with takaki, but his own image/memories of her. I understand this is part of the message, but again, the extent of him torturing himself without at least trying to contact akari was foolish and unrealistic. Even kanae was able to gather the resolve to accept that they will never be together, while takaki just sat about and wallowed in his misery neither pursuing akari or moving on. In doing this he wasted away his youth, as well as really hurting kanae, with whom he could have easily had a healthy relationship.
However, at the end i couldn't help but feel sorry for them because of how well the first part was done. Without the inconsistencies i would have found this movie as great as many others found it, but the lack of verisimilitude in the second part really dampened my enjoyment of this movie.
