I'd like to preface this review with the fact that I LOVE this series. I'm probably biased because it hits me right in all of the different features that I enjoy in manga. I only read it in the last few days, and it was a complete binge because I couldn't put it down. I've been reading manga for most of my life, and I think the only one I've enjoyed more was Shaman King, but this series has a long way to go, and may prove to be my favorite. I absolutely can't wait until it's licensed to be released in English.
Gushing aside,
...
as of the time of this writing, only up to chapter 31 has been translated (even by fans, as far as I can find), so that's what I'm going on. The anime looked good, so I picked it up, only to not want to wait for the next episode to come out. So I decided to read the manga. It's just as good as the anime, if not better.
The story is handled very well. There are three factions fighting towards an end goal and against each other. Things are very clear when it comes to figuring out where the story is going--and yet not completely predictable. It's very much a common setup for the target audience genre, but that's certainly not a bad thing.
The art is extremely clear and nice to look at. The artist does a very good job with not only scenery and characters, but action scenes as well. It's all framed in a very nice way and it's easy to tell when you're looking at a comedic scene and when you're looking at a serious scene.
The characters are great, and with time, they're being fleshed out more. At this time, I think it's best to leave this category at "they have a lot of promise and the series hints that the promise will come to fruition."
I'm obviously enjoying this manga a lot, since I binged it and then scoured the internet for more translations once I was caught up.
Overall, I'd definitely suggest this to anyone and everyone--and I have been. Bungou Stray Dogs is a great read and it's looking like that will be the case for quite a while to come.

I'm gonna be honest. We watched this for a video on our youtube channel, and honestly found ourselves really...confused and disturbed that we were interested and even invested in some parts of the story. The sex scenes were boring and practically unwatchable, but this this OVA, unlike the others....wasn't the worst thing I've ever watched?
Anyway, as a recommendation I would never in any way shape or form tell anyone that this is good, neither for using as pornographic material, or to watch, but if you've exhausted every other option, it's not the absolute worst choice, I guess.
This series started as total garbage, and
...
is aggressively disturbing as a genre, but at the same time, if you're into the genres, I guess I can't really tell you that it wouldn't be your thing, because from what I understand, it's the most popular of the genre, so that must be for some reason. So I guess, if you wanted to watch weird shota porn, then it'd be an okay choice.

Pupa is uncomfortable at best and irritating at worst. I say uncomfortable at best, because that's what I want a horror anime to make me feel. Some horror anime do this well, such as Higurashi. Make no mistake by recommendations, this anime is not one of them.
Originally this series aired censored. I watched the first two episodes that way and dropped it, picking it back up later when it was released uncensored. I don't believe in judging a series on it's censored versions. Each episode is a short four minutes, so I picked it up and watched it as if it were an OVA
...
instead. I find this format works better, and even found myself questioning why the studio didn't just release it as such.
The art direction is nice to look at about 40% of the time, but the other 60% is absolutely terrible. The only reason I particularly found interest in the 40% of good was because I like the watercolor look they chose to use throughout. Any time the animation did any sort of movement, it was jaunty and muted. I might as well have been looking at paintings telling the story.
I don't often write reviews for MAL, but Pupa warranted a response. This was an anime I was quite looking forward to that really dropped the ball. There were scenes that were unwatchable not because they were horrific, but because they were needlessly dragged on throughout an episode. When you only have four minutes, wasting that four minutes on scenes that looked like they were just copypasted over and over was useless. This led to a lack in an easily followed storyline, because some episodes were made to shock, but others were there to give vague information on what I assume the manga made out to be a very good story, from what I've heard of it. I can't imagine trying to keep this story in my head from week to week, as forgettable as they made it seem. I was so unaware of what was going on in most of the series even watching it all at once because there was zero transition, even when I had to stop and click on the next episode. Settings and locations changed with no warning, large amounts of time passed. There are even plot points that are started but never touched on again.
At some points they tried to add comedy into an episode for no reason at all. It broke what little mood and immersion they had going for the series immediately.
It's hard to recommend this to anyone, even fans of the genre. It's not bad to spend around 40 minutes on, I guess, but I certainly won't be rewatching it.
