both are historical animes with a supernatural twist. there is also a "narration" of events that occurred during the period, which in Hakuouki is provided by Chizuru and Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto by an actual narrator. later on in BKI events from Hakuouki "clash", such as Hijikata meeting with the other leaders, etc, are mentioned in both animes.

Both consists of a main character who's a guy. He meets a special girl with fighting abilities, both very powerful. The guys are somehow bonded to the girls, forced to, and they help fight enemies and such. there are also romantic moments.

the first few episodes (and some of the ones after) are about haunted school buildings in Ghost Hunt, similar to the one in Ghost Stories. are both about those that "destroy" ghosts, though Ghost Stories is a lot more comedic in the English dubbed version.

The main guy in both series is "forced" to stay with a girl. These girls aren't exactly human, either. A mermaid in Seto no Hanayome, and a goddess in Ah! My Goddess. And both of these girls have a "rival": Lunar, and Sayoko. The girls are really powerful too. They are good at cooking, and singing. In both cases, both Sun and Belldandy tends to beat their rivals in competitions.

...then you might like Hakuouki add

Both are about the Shinsengumi. If you don't consider that the characters are drawn differently, and that the main characters are different, (Tetsu and Chizuru), then Hakuouki can almost be considered a "sequel" to Peacemaker Kurogane, (in a way), as the Ikedaya Incident was the final event in Peacemaker Kurogane, while it is one of the first events in Hakuouki. They're both awesome!
