Hell's Paradise is the type of show that I've been longing for. Loose plot armor, meaningful character deaths, philosophy and etc. It's one of the Shonens that tries not to follow the trend of many modern anime adaptations nowadays. I can't recommend it enough. Every character has a personality of their own and we as the audience get to sympathize with most of them and their pasts. All the horrible reviews that are being made for this anime, don't listen to them. I'm giving this anime a generous 10/10, it had made me interested enough to read the manga.
Anyone with a basic understanding of
...
Asian philosophy will get how a character's powers would work in this show. It would be interesting to see more of the world before the story started. Including the journey to get to the island. We don't really get to see that, Hell's Paradise island a big deal in the first place. This is not a spoiler as it shows at the start of the anime. Other than that, it is a relatively short anime give it a watch. Not going to type a whole essay on this it's a straightforward story. Look forward to future episodes/seasons.

Skip the fillers, read the manga after the Kyoto arc. Nothing else to say here. If you expect historical accuracy, it's not that accurate. It has a semi-realistic approach to powers that is consistent enough.
The fillers are by far one of the worst Shonen fillers you will ever see in your life. Avoid it 100%. The movies are a prequel to Kenshin's past life and how he received his scar, something that is superior in quality than the anime itself. After Kyoto arc, the characters become two dimensional, straight up an insult to it's own story.
You will find it boring. Some character development
...
is skipped out and not fully adapted into the anime. While Kenshin has one of the most memorable opening scenes for it's time, how the story progresses is ok. The anime itself did not stood the test of it's time and aged poorly. The manga does everything superior.

I suggest not reading reviews before watching a story as it can ruin the element of surprise. I gave this a 10. What I will say is that it's an old animation that some people won't find that emotional due to it's 2000s storytelling style. Nowadays modern anime focus on flashy and "cool" animations without uniqueness and substance. Jin-Rou is a good example of a movie with unique substance. It's a rather straightforward and short movie that can leave a lot desired like Princess Mononoke. Keep an open mind that these movies are old and are what shaped similar animations, tropes and stories today. Whether
...
it is left open for interpretation or not, that's what a story should do, to get the audience thinking and craving for what happens next. Some writers have different reasons to create their story, every person who watches this movie will not have the same level of understanding with historical events. For people who enjoys history, and a little of romance, you may or may not like it. Personally, I recommend watching this.
I have to agree with ZephSilver's review. The movie is indeed hyper-realistic for a show made in the year 2000, great animation for it's time. With other great semi-realistic titles/shows such as Rurouni Kenshin, Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira (Some are 90s others 2000s), you will find this worth watching. It deserved the win for best movie of it's time. Jin-Rou is a realistic show with realistic characters that takes place in an alternative WW2 era in Japan. The theme of this movie is easy to figure out. There are some fade to black scenes-- without revealing the importance of said location or plot point which is classic narration technique. A lot of authors have their own way not revealing said information that is important for later (foreshadowing).
Most critics rate by how they feel about a movie or show than objectively. The ending is also left open ended for the audience. It gives off this dystopian feel as you don't really get to see most of the character's past lives that shaped them the way they are today. Not needed, since everyone in the story had all struggled from war. Love or duty. What it means to be human. What is sacrificed in the end. No one lives forever. Trust or lie. Man, beast or wolf. The prey or a predator. All lives are equal in that sense.

**MOSTLY SPOILER-FREE REVIEW**
What aged really well was honestly its animation for a 1997 anime movie, it's a shame that most anime that are made nowadays never really put that much effort into its animation and art
...
that I would consider revolutionary. Because this movie IS one of the animations that influenced and changed the anime writings and art we have today. I was first introduced to Studio Ghibli's other movies like Ponyo and Totoro. Little did I know the movie I had always kept in my mind was actually within this studio that I tried to search for. In fact, I had planned to watch it just yesterday. It was because of a couple of flash games that I played that got me interested in that "one tribal character" (my favorite) that apparently was really good in the game. As I grew, I had forgotten about it. If she was in this flash game that must mean whatever show or movie this character is in must be good! And it surely did not disappoint.
The characters and the story, in my opinion, were a little bit bland and could have been fleshed out more. Basically, the characters could have used more personality, but it was still enough for everyone with higher than a single-digit IQ to comprehend and make an interpretation that everything that happens in the movie is a lot deeper than it looks, I tried very hard to make fun of it but it was just that coherent of a story to do so. The characters are a lot more complex than they seem to be, I can't get myself to not like them. I certainly do wish some of the side characters have more screen time like Eboshi's followers. Many people's expectations nowadays of good animation AND story, they would consider mediocre stories like Demon Slayer as 'good.' What most older anime and anime movies tend to suffer from now as compared to modern ones is usually the story since other stories have been reusing the same tropes from older animations over and over again. Everyone loves nature. The moral of the story is that humans are greedy and don't fuck with nature. In this movie, there really aren't any good guys or bad guys, just people, and nature. And that is what made this movie unique. It was not afraid to show death from time to time.
The love story could have been developed a little more, but I guess it's fair why the "tribal" character falls in love with a human despite hating humans. It felt unnatural, which to me is more telling than showing. For this part I could be wrong and may have missed the tiny details that led up to them. In my personal opinion, it is a lot better than Tarzan because Mononoke Hime was far less romanticized, it does everything that Disney fails to deliver.
EDIT 8:20 PM: Compare this with Avatar (2009) which had great animation but a crappy story. Princess Mononoke balances storytelling and art, put those together and you get the perfect film.
The major takeaway from Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) is that it SHOWS more than it TELLS. This is a Japanese fantasy story that takes place in the late Muromachi period (years 1337 to 1573). The creators of this film did not intend this to be a historically accurate film rather its the immersion. This film managed to deliver and succeeded. I know that I left a lot of my reasons vague in this review but I rather not type an essay. So I'm glad I had just found the film that had been on my mind for years.
EDIT 10/9/2022 8:09 PM: This film is still worth watching even by today's standards. While the animation definitely does not compare to Spirited Away (by the way it's a 2001 film with impressive animation for its time), I believe this is probably the best Studio Ghibli film to date.
10/10 masterpiece.

The anime is fine, doesn't follow the game's plot but rather mixed the endings together. I started with Disgaea 3 until I went back to play its previous predecessors, I started to appreciate the 1st game's plot a lot more than most of its newer games. The anime did an ok job with its adaptation, the comedy at least. This is an honest review with Disgaea. For those who had played this game assuming most of its viewers did, would enjoy it for what it is (like me). However, for those who haven't played the game would probably not like it, not like the person

reading this would care actually. So I'm going to be brief.
The art is good for its time I guess, the sounds were alright, there was some character development mainly for Laharl that one would not expect when they are first introduced to Disgaea. My enjoyment for the anime is indifferent. The comedy was rather unique for its time as well.
Overall, it just brought a nostalgic feeling in my childhood. If I were to look at it in an unbiased honest way, overall it was ok. I recommend the Disgaea games way more than the anime itself. The anime adaptation for games isn't the exactly the greatest nowadays.
I would rate the anime 6 out of 10 prinnies. Loved for its comedy, but recommend 100% the games instead.
9 out 10 prinnies for its game's unique rpg mechanics and tradition grinding.
