They both propose the same plot. Two lazy individuals who somehow get mixed up with military duties and becoming the "leader" of their squad. More than enough action in the both of them and the style of fighting typically endures warfare and tactics only the "leaders" can think of. Easily two of my favorite animes to date.

They both portray robots/machines fighting while someone is usually controlling them in some way or another. Plus the plot is almost exactly the same; fighting for the one they love.
