Personally I thought this series was outstanding. The art style was extremely well made, the collection of music is some of the best I've heard in all of anime, the characters were mostly great, but the ones that were great stand with the best in all of anime. The only negative was the ending, sadly.
The story:
Darling in the FranXX begun as a dystopian future with mechs. Similar to Evangelion, but I feel that this adaptation is better. They world build very nicely in the beginning and the implementation of the mechs enforces the romance genre that DitF is placed into. The romance blended with the

action well and continued down that path, placing it initially among the ranks of other highly rated anime's...I believe earning north of an 8.6 overall score. So what sent wrong? Well, the second they placed the romance in the backseat and decided to turn DitF into a shitty Ender's Game. The ending was tragic to say the least and completely ruined the show for many. Honestly, the very end of the show placed the romance at the forefront again and ended beautifully. However, people overshadow the entirety of the show with the shitty ending and I feel this does a disservice to the story. Most people will agree that episode 13: "The beast and the prince" was one of the best episodes in all of anime, certainly in the top 50. Many of my friends watched this series and not a single one got through that point without crying. I think the emotion the story causes gives at least an 8 in the story category, does it not?
Art:
Very subjective section, either the art style clicks with you or it doesn't. This one clicks with me. Enough said I feel, the animation was stellar, nothing Fate level. But still outstanding none the less. Earns a 10 for me.
Sound:
Again very subjective. I think the entire sound track was one of the best in anime history. Every ending theme was incorporated extremely well with each episode and "Torikago" will forever be my favorite anime song. Also, I enjoyed how they did not change the intro song halfway through like most shows do. Nothing short of a 10.
Characters:
When is the last time you can recall a character sweeping the nation like Zero Two did? Kirito, Jotaro, Goku, Lelouche? She still remains one of the most popular characters in all of anime in 2021! Even if you think most of the supporting cast was shit, the characters they tried with were great. Zero Two carries this show, and that alone is enough for me to give this category a 10.
Enjoyment:
I feel like you already know how much I enjoyed this show...I don't hand out 10s very often, I believe that I have only given a 10 to Code Geass and Fate Zero other than this show.
Conclusion:
As you can tell from the sporadic rankings, this is one of the most polarizing shows in anime, either you love it or you hate it. And if you hate it, you hate the ending only. If you just hate the show you are in an extreme minority. I feel that the other 8.5-10 ratings grade the show without the space ending, the 7-8.5 ratings grade the entirety of the show, the 5.5-7 let the ending overshadow the rest of the show, the 1s ratings are the pissed off neckbeards who care way too much about cartoons and send death threats to studios for messing up a fictitious story, and the 2-5.5 ratings are just idiots. This show is a must watch for anyone who enjoys anime and will go down in history as that polarizing, great show with a shitty ending. 02 gang :)
